Silver City Arts group's Saturday, Dec. 7 holiday event from noon to 4pm includes music by cellists Diane Kotik and Becky Crowe, a holiday craft activity for all ages led by Erich and Chali Haugen, and complimentary sweets.

The event also includes opportunities to buy unique gifts made by Comstock locals. Some of the items for sale include:

November is National Native American Heritage Month; observe the month by learning about some unique and enduring contributions a family of Native Americans made to our area. As the month winds down, and the good weather still holds, come out and visit the historic Wungnema House on the east side of Mills Park on Sunday, November 24th during the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation’s monthly open house.

Heading into the weekend before Thanksgiving, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 25th annual Carson High School Holiday Craft Fair, a “War of the Worlds” play at the Brewery Arts Center, a Chili Bingo Night fundraiser to benefit the Carson Middle School Band, laughs at the Carson Nugget and much more.

Nevada Author, Sandie La Nae will be selling her popular books at the Flying Pig Flea Market for your gift giving ideas.
Genre's include the "Weird" volumes, co-authored with Special Works Historian, Arline La Ferry, and the "Historic-Paranormal" books, featuring historic and haunted buildings in the Carson City area.

Titles include: WEIRD - "Carson City," "Reno," and the "Virginia City Trilogy."

Along with "St. Charles Hotel," "The Old Genoa Bar", "Alpine Hotel in Markleeville," "Buckland Station," "St. Mary Louise Hospital," "Wells Fargo Office," and others.

During the cold winter months in a pocket of the capital city, a bit of magic is sprinkled about on the historic rail that once transported gold from Virginia City to the mint in Carson City, but now transports elves, hot cocoa, and silver bells for a few special weeks each year.

The Polar Express rolled into town on Nov. 15 with the help of the historic V&T Railway Commission, and with it, a certain jolly old man and his magical helpers.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources on Monday announced the appointment of Heidi Swank as the inaugural Administrator for NDCNR’s new Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include Polar Express train rides, Touched By Angels hosts a garden craft show on Saturday, a night photo shoot at the Nevada State museum, Rob Sherwood headlines the Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget, 'Matilda the Musical' and more!

One of the many challenges the Nevada Day Committee faces is judging the parade entries, as far as who is the best in which group or category, along with Overall, President, Parade Director, and People’s Choice Awards.

The reason for the difficulty is simple: every parade entry brings their own unique style of artistic expression when it comes to portraying whatever they are truly passionate about, and therefore how do you judge one over the other?

While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. The Virginia City Silent Riders raised this 36 star USA Flag on Saturday at the Sun Mountain House B&B to honor the State of Nevada and show support to Bud and his new business in Virginia City.

Join South Lake Tahoe’s Sugar Pine Foundation and Patagonia at Historic Bowers Mansion Wednesday, Nov. 13th from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the reseeding of sugar pine seedlings to the burn scar of the Little Valley Fire, which devastated nearly 2,300 acres and destroyed 23 homes in October of 2016.

Heading into the Veterans Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days. Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. As part of the Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Snapshot: Culling Our History from the Family Album, opens on December 5, 2019, at the Nevada Humanities Program Gallery in Las Vegas. The exhibition is presented in partnership with the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. Snapshot is co-curated by Peter Michel, Interim Director of Special Collections and Archives, and Aaron Mayes, Curator for Visual Materials. The exhibition will be on display December 5, 2019, through January 23, 2020.

Chautauqua characters Snowshoe Thompson, Lillian Virgin and Anna Harris return to Genoa, Nev., on Saturday, Nov. 23 5 p.m., at the Genoa Town Hall.

This Chautauqua event features Genoa residents of the past. Chautauquans include Steve Hale as Snowshoe Thompson, the legendary “Mailman of the Sierra”, Kim Harris as Lillian Virgin, the originator of the Genoa Candy Dance and DebiLynn Smith as Anna Harris, early Genoa pioneer business owner.

The Nevada Commission for Women unveiled a limited edition license plate celebrating women’s suffrage as a commemoration of the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote.

The plate itself is historic to Nevada, as it was the first assembly bill, Assembly Bill 499, to be backed by only women. Bills need a majority vote to pass any legislation, and this session was the first session any state in the country saw a legislature with a female-led majority.

Saturday, November 2

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - Incident Commander Kevin Breitwieser has declared that the Caples Fire is now 100% contained and in patrol status at 3,435 acres. There has been almost no change in fire size since October 18. The extreme wind event on October 26 that prompted a public safety power shutoff was a good test of the containment lines and resulted in three small spots which were extinguished. Traces of smoke from interior burning will continue to be visible, but no additional fire growth is expected.

Events include the second annual Evening with Divas in Carson City, a Día de Muertos celebration at the Nevada State Museum, Nevada Artists Association’s 40th anniversary celebration, paranormal ghost investigations in Virginia City, a pie baking contest in Gardnerville and much more!

The Fall visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in Silver City is Allison Rasmussen of Carson City.

Valedictorian of the 2018 graduating class at Argent Preparatory Academy, Rasmussen studied art at Western Nevada College through their early college entry program and completed her Associate of Arts degree at 18.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Poet David Lee was a visiting artist at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and will be back again this winter. His repeated stays in the historic Comstock town inspired his latest book of poems, Mine Tailings. It is dedicated to the people of Silver City. The book was released by 5 Sisters Press this Fall, and will be the focus of Lee’s reading at the Silver City Schoolhouse (community center) on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

It’s official. On Thursday, Nevada joined the “Confluence of States,” a coalition of 16 bipartisan states centered on a set of shared principles, common values, and best practices surrounding outdoor recreation and conservation.
