On Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 6 p.m., Battle Born Progress will host its biennial Northern Nevada fundraising event, Celebrate Progress, in Carson City. The event recognizes the outstanding work of Northern Nevada’s progressive leaders, activists, volunteers, and organizations for their nonstop commitment to progressive values.

CARSON CITY — As the district works on aligning workforce preparedness efforts under the Work-Based Learning umbrella, community partners will have more opportunities to share information with students including career exploration, preparation and training.

RENO — Local and regional industries will come together as part of the University of Nevada, Reno’s inaugural cybersecurity conference from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 2 in the Joe Crowley Student Union. Participants will discuss ways to tackle the growing challenges in cybersecurity through building a collaborative and synergistic relationship between industries and academia.

Sergio Trejo Jr., a Las Vegas native and first-generation college graduate, visited several Carson City schools recently to share his inspiring story about his admittance to medical school. Trejo presented to more than 150 students.

CARSON CITY — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently announced that Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center has achieved a 4-star rating for an acute care hospital, out-ranking the national average of 3-stars.

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Health’s Board of Directors appointed Alan Garrett as the new Chief Executive Officer effective April 1, 2019, replacing Ed Epperson who retired Dec. 31, 2018. A seasoned healthcare executive with diverse experience and a progressive leadership style, Garrett will assume day-to-day control of the Carson Tahoe Health system.

World Hearing Day is March 3 every year, held to help raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world.

In recognition of the day, Carson Valley Medical Center is offering free hearing evaluations Friday, March 1 and Friday, March 8 through its Occupational Health Clinic in Minden at 897 Ironwood Drive.

Approximately 20 percent of Americans, or 48 million, report some degree of hearing loss. At age 65, the numbers grow to 33 percent. Additionally, nearly 15 percent of school-age children have some degree of hearing loss.

Nevada Health Centers will offer oral healthcare to school children in Carson City on Wednesday and Thursday through the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.

The Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation is accepting applications for its annual scholarship award process. The Foundation’s mission is to provide resources to maintain and improve local healthcare services. One of the resources most in demand is highly trained healthcare personnel. The CVMC Hospital Foundation scholarships are intended to assist students in pursuing healthcare careers which will improve not only the local healthcare systems but the healthcare industry overall.

In the tradition of TED, a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, comes TEDxCarsonCity, a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.

Good morning Carson City, today is Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019 and it will be a soggy one at that. Rain will continue throughout the morning, changing to snow showers later this afternoon, which has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for the lower valley areas such as Carson City and Carson Valley. Forecasters urge motorists not to travel into the Sierra today as several feet of heavy snow will impact roadways and travel.

Sierra Nevada Holistic Services (SNVHS) has been in business for the last 5 years. Until recently, the organization’s primary services were massage, energy work, and aromatherapy. The business owner, Andrea Felesina, has since become a dual board-certified family nurse practitioner. With a background in holistic/alternative practice, Andrea seeks to provide the communities of Northern Nevada with an east meets west approach to health care. The first weekend of 2019 also means the first Saturday of the month, which is the day of the Downtown Business Association Monthly Wine Walk in downtown Carson City, come rain, snow, wind or shine.

That's a good thing, too, because this weekend will likely have all of that.

Spring semester at Western Nevada College is your opportunity to earn one of the industry-recognized credentials that Nevada employers want from their new hires. WNC offers certifications during spring semester that could lead to employment in industries such as manufacturing, information technology, computer-aided drafting, welding, machining, bookkeeping, health care, construction and automotive mechanics.

Individuals considering enrolling in nursing assistant and EMS classes this spring at Western Nevada College must have their prerequisite CPR course completed.

WNC is providing two different one-day sessions of the required Healthcare Provider CPR (EMS 100) class prior to spring semester. This course also is a prerequisite for admission into the nursing program.

The CPR classes will be offered on Saturday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 19. Both sessions will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Carson Tahoe Health (CTH) and the Carson Tahoe Breast Center have recently been recognized by the National Cancer Institute for Outstanding Contributions in Oncology Research.

The spirit of Christmas and Hanukkah come to life as the 18-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra (RJO) presents, “A World of Joy,” featuring holiday music from the U.S. to Brazil, Puerto Rico, Israel, Russia, Austria and back.

Joining the RJO is Pat Esters' Gospel Choir, starring vocalists Pat Esters, Lori Johnson, David Wells, and Caitlin Collins. The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra will open the show at the Reno performances.

The first shows are Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Cargo Concert Hall at Whitney Peak Hotel in Reno.

CARSON CITY — Open Enrollment is now underway, and consumers need to be wary. Consumers shopping for qualified health plans should beware of telemarketers and websites advertising discount medical plans and short-term plans while falsely claiming they are compliant with the Affordable Care Act.

CARSON CITY — USDA Rural Development State Director Phil Cowee announced Tuesday that residents in 15 of Nevada’s rural and frontier counties will gain access to healthcare through recently approved federal broadband grants.

Douglas High School’s athletic department received a pair of orange-clad Automatic External Defibrillator devices from Carson Valley Medical Center Tuesday afternoon.

CVMC primary care provider Jim Gocke, APRN, and CVMC Hospital Foundation board member Nita Schwartz, MD, were on hand to present the devices to Douglas High student athletes and athletic department administration.

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15 through Dec. 7) is here and if you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or a Prescription Drug plan, then you will be familiar with the Annual Notice of Change document (ANOC). It is extremely important to review this document as it will help insure you are getting the most out of your Medicare Advantage Plan. The ANOC was mailed to plan members no later than Oct. 1 and it details any changes in coverage that will take effect in January 2019.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced the appointment Friday of CJ Manthe to the Public Utilities Commission. Manthe will take the seat of current Commissioner Bruce Breslow who will retire effective Nov. 2.

Last Friday, I was enjoying Open Mic Night at A to Zen and sipping on a cup of tea, when my heart and mind was captured by a ukulele and the voice of Carson City newcomer Kelsey Kelly.

This morning on my radio show, I discussed the topic of forgiveness. It’s a tough subject, especially if you have been hurt. However, forgiveness is not for the person or situation being forgiven. It’s for you. And, sometimes, the person or situation isn’t the only thing that needs to be forgiven. You need to forgive yourself as well.

CARSON CITY — Even though the fall semester has already started at Western Nevada College, there are a variety of classes for individuals to enroll in over the next few months.

Housing prices for both homeowners and renters alike in Carson City have been climbing as the housing market increases, but wages aren't following suit. There is housing available in Carson, but in some cases they're remaining empty, as some simply can't afford to pay the high costs of living anymore.
