Submitted by editor on Wed, 06/01/2016 - 1:16pmThere will be no better place to be Thursday, July 14, than at Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City for the eighth annual Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project, when the summer air fills with the unstoppable rhythm, blues and funk sounds of Tower of Power, who have delighted crowds since they first began playing in Oakland, Calif.
I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: May 7-8
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Fri, 05/06/2016 - 8:13pmI am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.
Sorting out the rumors about The Greenhouse Project
Submitted by admin on Fri, 05/06/2016 - 5:07pmRecently, an article was posted to Carson Now by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension promoting a spring plant sale fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, located behind Carson High School.
Although the article itself seemed very non-controversial, the comments posted to it were anything but.
JoAnne Skelly: Weed season is here
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 04/30/2016 - 7:55amWe are reaping the rewards of a wet winter: Weeds!
While weeds are merely plants out of place, they taunt us with their persistence. They torment us and our pets with their burrs. They take over the lovely flowerbeds we work so hard to keep attractive. They compete with our veggies for water and nutrients. They overpower our desirable plants. They can harbor pest insects.
Later, after their growing season is over, their spent woody structures may blow up against fences or all over the yard creating a fire hazard.

Submitted by editor on Sun, 01/10/2016 - 3:41pmWith the New Year upon us let me begin this document by wishing you and yours a Happy New Year. May the year 2016 bring peace and happiness to each and every one of you.
This New Year will be a busy one for Carson City. Foremost on our minds, perhaps, is the Downtown Street Narrowing Project due to begin early February/March depending on weather conditions. One of the goals stated by Carson City staff is to have this project complete in time for the Nevada Day parade. We should, however, keep our chief consideration foremost: “Let's do it Right.”
Column: Greenhouse Project beneficials at work
Submitted by editor on Fri, 12/25/2015 - 1:52pmWhenever I go to The Greenhouse Project at Carson High School in Carson City, I learn something new. This week it was about which kinds of beneficial insects work best in a greenhouse at this time of year. Pests can be a constant challenge in the optimum environment of a greenhouse.

JoAnne Skelly: The Aging Apple Tree
Submitted by editor on Mon, 11/02/2015 - 1:32amLast week I spoke with Cory, The Greenhouse Project manager about aging apple trees at his house that an arborist suggested he cut down and replace with dwarf varieties.
Although the apples have always been fruitful, the arborist thinks these trees are almost at the end of their productive years. Cutting down these old, yet healthy, trees may be acceptable from the standpoint of apple production, but since they also serve as shade trees, they would be a great loss in the overall landscape.

Thursday, Feb. 26: Things to do in Carson City
Submitted by Danielle Cook on Thu, 02/26/2015 - 7:09amOnce upon a time in Nevada, a Reno tailor named Jacob Davis wrote a letter to Levi Strauss about his pocket rivets, and thus the blue jean was born. Coincidentally, today is Strauss’ birthday. Once upon a time in Nevada, Buffalo Bill Cody was just a kid riding for the Pony Express. It’s his birthday, too. Fun fact: Cuba Crutchfield, a trick-rope cowboy with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, is buried in Carson City’s Lone Mountain Cemetery. Once upon a time in Nevada, a man was shot in Reno.

Cooperative Extension: Green Giving the Greenhouse Project way
Submitted by editor on Wed, 12/31/2014 - 9:36amOne of my dreams in my professional life was to introduce young people to the viability of a great career in horticulture. I have been fortunate to realize that goal through my involvement with The Greenhouse Project. However, awakening the passion for growing and working with plants in youth is only one wonderful aspect of this project. I also get to work with caring dedicated people, help beautify downtown Carson City and, best of all, help feed those in need.
