Two Eagle Valley Middle School students and two Pioneer High School students and their families experienced a tragic fire May 16 in Carson City.

Antonio and Alexis Trujillo’s family, and Jordan and Theodore Leyva’s family are now displaced following this incident.

Western Nevada College celebrated the graduation of 539 students with 571 degrees and certificates Monday morning at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Carson City.

Thirty-eight employees who have worked a collective 750 years at Carson City School District will retire this year. The retirees will be recognized at the school board meeting Tuesday, May 22.

A hearty congratulations goes out to those of the graduating class of Western Nevada College. Valenzuela started as a civil engineer major at the University of Nevada, Reno, then transferred to Western Nevada College to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Construction Management.

CARSON CITY — With the addition of two new educational wings at Fremont Elementary School, expected completion by fall 2019, nearly 100 pieces of student artwork, which previously decorated the walls of the corridors, will be removed and hopefully reunited with their creators or family members. Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, also known as POST, is pleased to announce 28 graduates, from 18 Nevada agencies, will accept their peace officers’ oath as POST Academy Class 2018-01.

CARSON CITY — The Western Nevada College President Search Committee voted today to recommend Dr. Vincent R. Solis as the next president of the College. Dr. Solis is currently the Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Laredo Community College in Laredo, Texas.

CARSON CITY — Without the efforts of Lupe Ramirez, many first-generation Latino students wouldn’t have overcome common barriers to achieve associate degrees, bachelor degrees and better-paying professional jobs in the workforce.

Booker T. Washington said, “Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way.” Taking a different approach to education is Pioneer High School’s specialty. Because of their innovative solutions, members of Pioneer’s Carson City staff were selected to participate in the 2018 Nevada Department of Education Mega Conference.

With the end of the school year approaching, the Carson City School District announced Thursday it meets or exceeds the minimum number of minutes taught per day, and in turn, students will not be required to make up the two days lost due to weather-related school cancellations.

An estimated 24 runners and walkers got their bodies moving Saturday morning during the eighth annual Carson High Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk.

CARSON CITY — More than 115 Carson High School Career and Technical Education, Health Occupations Students of America shined in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nev. last month. More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jim Primka, who has been with the agency for 21 years, graduated March 16 from the FBI National Academy, Class 271, in Quantico, Virginia.

The Blue Thunder Marching Band placed 2nd out of 10 participating bands in the 2018 Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco, Calif.

What a blast it is to participate in competitive endeavors and events, whether the competitors be children or world class champions, whether the challenge be a sporting event or a writing competition.

Okay. This is one of the hardest weekend lists I’ve ever had to do. This dump of snow has cancelled some events, but others are in full force. Best I can tell, St. Patrick’s Day parties are not deterred by a little snowfall. There will be no parade in Virginia City, but the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest is on. Head to downtown Carson for more green beer, Irish music, and corned beef and cabbage than you’ll know what to do with.
