Carson City Symphony to begin rehearsals for 33rd season

Attention musicians: The Carson City Symphony will begin rehearsals for the 2016-17 concert season on Wednesday, August 31, 7:00 to 9:15 p.m., at the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.

The Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, is a volunteer orchestra of about 60 players who perform music from the 15th to 21st centuries. It is open to string players at any time without audition, and to other instrumentalists when positions are available.

Nevada Day Parade 2015: One State, Many Cultures celebrated in photos

Nevadans from north, south, east west and central make the annual pilgrimage to the state capital to honor and celebrate statehood which came, Oct. 31, 1864.

ESL Honors Students and Tutors

An 11th Year celebration award ceremony was given to honor all ESL tutors, students and new U.S. citizens of the ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada. The event was held at the Governor's Mansion. Ethnic Salvadoran food was supplied by La Santaneca Restaurant. Entertainment was supplied by Metzonali Folklore Dancers.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Letter: Support Small Business or prison inmates?

This is a letter I sent out to Gov. Sandoval, and multiple other State Representatives. I felt that the general public should know what our prison system is doing to multiple small business owners in Carson City and Nevada. I would be very pleased if someone would bring this to light and show what our tax dollars are doing in this economy.

The Carson City Historical Society will be having its General Membership Meeting on Sunday, June 28, 2015, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Red's Old 395 Grill in Carson City. The meeting will be in the private room at the northwest corner of the building. Jeffrey M. Kintop, State Archivist at the Nevada State Library and Archives, will discuss the 50th anniversary of the State Archives. Appointed State Archivist July 1, 2009, Kintop has worked at the Nevada State Library and Archives for 32 years.

Families and people of all ages by the dozens gathered in the shade of the Governor's Mansion backyard to listen to locally produced concert music performed by the Carson City Symphony. The musicians gave outstanding performances to community members during the warm Sunday evening at the mansion's lawn, on the west side of Carson City.

Halloween Special Effects at the Bender Mansion are Back

Troy and Melanie Wadsworth are famous for their Halloween cheer and awesome Disneyland quality special effects. The Bender Mansion is currently for sale and the Wadsworths have moved, however due to many request from the local community, the current listing brokerage, Bradway Properties is sponsoring the Wadsworth's so they can return and display their Halloween special effects on Oct. 30th 7 pm - 9pm (for those who do not want to fight the crowds on Halloween Night).

The Bender Mansion is located across the street from the Governor's Mansion, 707 West Robinson Street in Carson City.
