Elementary schools in the Carson City School District will host individual school site welcome events for all transitioning preschoolers and incoming kindergarteners. The events are designed for students and parents to tour their new school, meet teachers and administrators and build on the fun and excitement about going to school.

Carson City School District is hosting a Community Sustainability Night Thursday, May 16, 5-7 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa. Families and members of the community are invited to come celebrate initiatives and partnerships for sustainable practices.

Another picture-perfect Carson City day awaits as we head into Monday, May 13, 2019. We're looking at mostly sunny skies with daytime highs in the low 80s. And then by midweek, another round of showers looks likely, which will help cool us off. Activities for Monday include art demonstrations and showings, presentations and more. Enjoy.

What distinguishes Carson City from every other city in Nevada is its unique history, and every citizen of this city should become familiar with how our City shaped the history of Nevada that still resonates today.

Yes, for some, history elicits a yawn, but once you get into it, the history of a community can be fascinating and will get you off your couch and perhaps onto your bicycle, for much of our history can be found within the downtown core where bike riding is easy. Don’t own a bike, well, you can walk to many of the sites.

The weather is changing at Carson High School and so are the types of clothing some students are wearing. CHS Dean Sharon Hallinan sent an email out to all CHS teachers about this weather changing challenge. Hallinan told teachers to “please remind students of the Dress Code; highlight the fact that bare midriffs and holey jeans, which violate the ‘Fingertip Rule’, are not allowed.”

Enjoy the first full day of summer with a cold beer and live music at the 2019 Capital City Brewfest. Tickets are now on sale for this year’s Capital City Brewfest taking place Saturday, June 22nd, from 3 – 8 pm in Downtown Carson City.

Nearly two dozen breweries and several food trucks will line the newly redesigned Curry Street. Plus, there will be live music in McFadden Plaza. You won’t want to miss hearing The Belle Sounds, an indie pop-rock band from Austin Texas. The five-member band is sure to entertain you with its three part harmonies, soaring melodies and lush sonic sounds.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

Heading into Thursday, May 9, 2019 we're looking at a few showers and partly sunny skies around Carson City. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

Sierra Lutheran High School, in collaboration with Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School and Mt. Cross Ministries, has released its 2019 Summer Programs registration. Collectively, the three entities will offer seven unique summer programs, including two week-long overnight programs.

As we head into the first day of the work week, Monday, May 6, 2019, we're looking at sunshine and a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms with a daytime high in the low 70s, according to weather service forecasters. April was an action packed month as several Carson High School clubs put on The Friendship Ball, A Night Under the Big Top Father Daughter Ball, and The Greatest Show on Earth 2019 Prom. Even more amazing than the dances are the students behind the scenes who, with the guidance of Leadership Adviser Ann Britt and FBLA Adviser Angila Golik, transformed the CHS Big Gym so that all visitors, young and old alike, would think they had walked into a beautiful dream.

The Carson City School District’s Bicycle Fun & Safety Day benefited the Carson City Schools Foundation this morning. The event was held at Fritsch Elementay School.

Sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health (CTH) and hosted by the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Safe Routes to School, local bike clubs and shops, the inaugural event served as a proving ground to acquaint experienced and less experienced bike riders with their eco-friendly transport mechanisms.

There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. May is National Bike Month, celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Here in Carson City, Muscle Powered hosts several fun and exciting bicycle-themed events throughout the month to satisfy everyone from the first-time cyclist to the long-term veterans.

Truly a springtime to remember in Carson City as we say goodbye to April, which leaves us with a spontaneous final chill, and hello to Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Temperatures should head back up into the low 60s by afternoon. Looking ahead there's art showings and painting workshops, a C-Hill hike to see the firefighting sheep, a school district strategic planning meeting, a Salsa dance class, and "Ideas on Tap," a monthly series of interactive conversations at The Union Eatery and Taphouse.
