Fritsch Elementary School in Carson City helped engage positive male role models this morning where more than 150 people attended “Supermen with Donuts.” The effort was designed to get dads, uncles, grandparents and father-figures more involved in school and childhood learning.

CARSON CITY — Many Nevada schoolchildren will take part in organized events to walk or bicycle to school on Wednesday Oct. 10 in recognition of International Walk to School Day. Children not taking part in an organized school event are encouraged to involve their family in safely walking or bicycling to school on Wednesday, Oct. 10 and other days.

Nine out of the 10 Carson City School District schools earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star certification, which signifies their buildings perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

Weekend events, including Oktoberfests and zany outhouse races, continue Sunday around Carson City and throughout the greater Reno-Tahoe area.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has proclaimed Oct. 2-5, 2018 the “Week of Respect.” In tow with the proclamation, the Carson City School District’s superintendent has made a Pledge of Achievement to ensure consistent implementation of anti-bullying programs and practices in all schools and work environments.

With daytime high temperatures in the low 70s, Sunday could just about be a near-perfect day for outdoor activities in celebration of September's swan song.

Carson City Health and Human Services is working with the Carson City School District to offer students annual seasonal flu vaccinations. There will be a team of CCHHS licensed nurses at each school to administer the flu vaccine. The vaccination is safe and a health action that benefits all age groups to protect against influenza illness.

Enjoy a warm, sunny first Sunday of Autumn by heading outdoors, where you can share space with some of our area's wildlife.

If your Sunday plans are still up in the air, consider a short trip to Reno very early in the morning to catch the final day of the 2018 Great Reno Balloon Race. Glow Show and Dawn Patrol start around 4:30 a.m. and Mass Ascension takes place by 6:30 a.m.

Time for some Sunday holiday adventure. The Carson Nugget has something special tonight, a Van Halen Tribute Band plays two concerts in their upstairs ballroom. For a lazy afternoon in the shade, you’ll find live music on the porch of the Genoa Bar. The Tahoe Orchestra brings their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert to St. Gall’s Church in Gardnerville. It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. A warm and hearty “welcome back” reverberated across the lawns, playgrounds and halls Monday morning throughout Carson City as classes officially kicked off for the 2018-19 school year.

We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.
