Js' Bistro to Host Fundraiser for the Dayton Food Pantry

Js’ Old Town Bistro will host a Spaghetti Feed on Tuesday, December 13th, from 5 – 8pm to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry. $10.00 buys a spaghetti dinner, with $5.00 going directly to the Food Pantry.
Last month nearly 3000 people sought help from The Pantry, including 127 new families, a significant increase over last year. That number is expected to rise even more as Christmas approaches.

Gov. Sandoval Dines with Dayton Students and Community Leaders

Dayton High School’s Culinary Arts class, one of Lyon County School District’s many Career and Education classes, prepared and served an elegant luncheon for Governor Brian Sandoval and area officials and community leaders Wednesday.

Thanking the students, Governor Sandoval said, “I had an opportunity last week to have lunch with former President George W. Bush at the Bellagio in Vegas. This lunch is every bit as good as what is offered at the Bellagio. This was very professional; the service was impeccable. You should be proud. You all have bright futures ahead of you.”

Dayton yard sale nets more than $2,000 for food bank

Freida Carbery of Dayton Food Pantry extended a big thank you to dozens of volunteers, including JPO youths and staff, who organized and ran the May 7 yard sale benefit for the local Dayton Food Pantry, with help from hundreds of people in the region who donated items for the fundraiser, which made $2,173 in one day for the busy pantry at 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton.

Healthy Communities Coalition: Collaboration Leads to Results

The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey hosts special speakers during public meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. Each meeting also includes resource sharing, updates and discussion on issues of regional importance such as health and wellness, substance abuse prevention and recovery, education, workforce development, etc. On May 12, the featured speakers will be from the Tobacco Cessation Helpline.

Dayton Health Fair Features Free Immunizations for Children and Adults

The Dayton Task Force has organized its annual, free community health fair for Saturday, May 14 from 9:30am-3pm at Community Roots nursery on Highway 50.

The fair will feature free immunizations for both children and adults, free blood pressure checks, and interactive booths offering education on diabetes, tobacco use cessation and prevention, gang prevention and awareness. The fair will also offer information on many other community groups, such as Dayton Task Force and Dayton Food Pantry, as well as health services in the Dayton region.

Dayton Food Pantry’s Spring Yard Sale

A big spring yard sale to raise funds for the busy nonprofit, Dayton Food Pantry, will be held on May 7 from 8am to 3pm at 4 Enterprise Way in Dayton. Director Freida Carbery said donations of items for the yard sale are welcome, and can be dropped off at the Food Pantry Monday-Friday between 10am and 4pm.

Emergency Food: Dayton Food Pantry is open for emergency food needs Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm at 4 Enterprise Way on Highway 50. The building space is generously donated by BCB Ventures.

Dayton Community Invited to Partner with Food Pantry for $1M Feinstein Challenge

During March and April, groups and individuals are invited to partner with the Dayton Food Pantry for The Feinstein $1 Million Challenge to fight hunger.

Mary Piper, organizer for the local Challenge, explained, “If groups donate non-perishable food items or money to Dayton Food Pantry in March and April, the Feinstein Foundation will add funds. The more donations we receive, the larger our slice of the pie will be.”

Dayton Food Pantry at Sutro Elementary School to be held on Jan. 22

On Saturday, Jan. 22 only, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate from Sutro Elementary School at 190 Dayton Village Parkway from noon until 4 p.m.

Sutro Elementary School offered an indoor venue for the pantry on January 22 so that people can come in out of the cold January weather.

A new group has formed to propose innovative strategies to create a healthy State with well-supported public systems and services and an improved fiscal system.

Members of the Nevada Values Coalition have met twice for “big tent”, nonpartisan meetings to discuss the complex issues, and members then further examined ideas through subcommittees.

Dayton Food Pantry at Community Center on Dec. 16

With the big distribution day for the holidays on Thursday, Dec. 16, the Dayton Food Pantry will operate that day only from the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street from noon to 5 p.m.

With unemployment in Lyon County at nearly 20 percent, donations are especially welcome this holiday season, explained Freida Carbery, director for the Pantry.

On the other days of December, the Food Pantry will be open for emergency food needs as usual, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 (east of Smith’s Grocery) Monday through Friday.

Dayton Food Pantry makes plea for Thanksgiving turkey donors

With an unemployment rate of nearly 20 percent in Lyon County, the Dayton Food Pantry has seen a big jump in requests for Thanksgiving food baskets and is asking the community for help.

Food Pantry Director Freida Carbery reports that while many individuals and groups have donated turkeys and trimmings, there are already 100 families in need on the Pantry list, and only 40 turkeys in the freezer. The Pantry's list of those in need doesn’t even include the numbers of families she expects to receive from the local schools this week.

Runners Help Raise Money for Dayton Children

With 34 people turning out for a good cause, the Dayton Resource Bank raised more than $1,100 during its 5K Run on Oct. 23. One hundred percent of the funds directly benefit Dayton area school children.

Among the participants were Dayton Elementary School Principal Cory Sandburg, Healthy Communities Coalition director Christy McGill, and the entire Freshman Volleyball team of Dayton High School.

The yard sale to benefit the Dayton Food Pantry raised over $1400! This will go a long way toward providing nutritious foods to families in the Dayton Valley.

Thank you to all those who helped feed their neighbors by donating items for sale and/or braving the stormy weather to shop at the sale.

The Dayton Food Pantry is run entirely by volunteers, and made possible because every part of the community- clubs, nonprofits, schools, county services, businesses, faith groups, etc - works together to stop hunger.

Flu shots offered at Dayton Food Pantry

Flu shots for anyone over 6 months of age, and commodities food distribution for those in need from Dayton, Silver City and Stagecoach takes place at the Dayton Food Pantry at 4 Enterprise Way and Highway 50 in Dayton on Oct. 21, between noon and 5 p.m.

Health and Human Services recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine. On Oct. 21 only, between noon and 5pm, Carson Health nurses will be able to provide the following types of flu shots at the Dayton Food Pantry at 4 Enterprise Way:

Dayton Valley Days this weekend

Music, parades, and plenty of fun are in store as the 22nd Dayton Valley Days kicks of Saturday and Sunday.

The two-day event features more than 100 food, music, arts and crafts booths, plus historical demonstrations and many other attractions.

Festivities will be at Old Town Dayton. A pancake breakfast by the Kiwanis Club begins at 7 a.m. both days. Festivities run from 9 a.m. to dusk on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Dayton Valley Days Parade Seeks Marilyn Monroe Look Alikes

Dayton Valley Days Committee is welcoming entries to both the general parade on Saturday, September 18, and to the Pet Parade on Sunday, September 19, 2010. This year’s parade will feature retired Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha and well-known Dayton Valley rancher Kay Winters as Grand Marshals.
