This year the Carson Nugget in Carson City will celebrate its 63rd annual Community Thanksgiving Feast on Thursday, Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome to join us in the Grand Ballroom. All guests will receive a free 8-inch turkey sandwich, stuffing, cranberry sauce and more.

On Tuesday, the Carson City Greenhouse Project broke ground on a new outdoor classroom at the Carson High School site, which will allow the Greenhouse Project's dream of continuing agriculture education to students year round in the Carson City community.

An expansion is underway at Carson City’s own The Greenhouse Project, which will provide more learning opportunities to those who are inclined toward agricultural science.

Celebrating the holidays around Carson City is a magic and glorious time, where the community comes together to celebrate and to give through several charity functions. Many in the community are grateful to have a roof over their head and food to eat without much of a struggle. But unfortunately for many families and individuals, having regular meals doesn't come easy.

Thank you to everyone who made the Friends in Service Helping, 8th annual Have A Heart fundraiser a success. Due to the generosity and kind-heartedness of the community, this year was the most successful yet!

A new “upcycle” corner has made its debut in Carson City’s FISH thrift store at the corner of Carson and Long streets. And FISH is asking the community to help name this corner of the store for a chance at a prize.

Upcycling means to reuse discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original.

FISH thrift store sales are a major source of revenue for this local non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of northern Nevadans. Its stores are also a great source of many items useful to those who create interesting and valuable household furnishings, clothing and art objects through the process of “upcycling.”

During the winter, the homeless population of Carson City can find warm beds to sleep at our rotating local churches nightly, but during the summer, no such places exist.

This is why Carson City Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Craig LaGier, who is also a deacon for St. Teresa of Avila’s Catholic Church, as well as the St. Vincent Advisor and Homeless Ministry, said sleeping bags and Y Athletic socks are the most important item he gives to the homeless.

The national nonprofit, Feeding Pets of the Homeless, welcomed Sierra Veterinary Hospital in Carson City as its first donation site a decade ago. Since then the hospital has collected more than 1,600 pounds of pet food and supplies from their clients and the community.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. With cold weather having settled into the region, five churches in Carson City have partnered this season to operate nightly winter warming shelters for the area's homeless. These volunteer-staffed shelters will rotate monthly, each providing a warm place to sleep for the homeless and their pets.

For many of us, our bowls are never empty. That cannot be said for those less fortunate who live paycheck to paycheck or live in the various motels filled with those who cannot afford permanent housing for their families.

The magic of Christmas Night comes alive again at First United Methodist Church in Carson City. Walk or drive the Road to Bethlehem, lit by over 800 luminaria, through 10 different live-action scenes depicting the night of Christ's birth.

Join us on Thanksgiving Day and give yourself an excuse for an extra piece of pie. The Carson City Turkey Trot is fitness event the entire family will enjoy Thanksgiving Day.

It’s time for the Nevada Day Weekend celebration! This year the celebration starts with a party on Friday, Oct. 27 with FREE live entertainment in downtown Carson City across from the Carson Nugget. Hours for the event are from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will support local charities like Advocates to End Domestic Violence and F.I.S.H.

The Arlington Event Center across from the Carson Nugget will also host a Craft & Vendor Fair from Oct. 27 to Oct. 29. Join the party across from the Carson Nugget Casino in Carson City for an action-packed weekend.

I’m sending good thoughts to those in the California fire zones: with as bad as the smoke is here, I can only imagine how bad their eyes burn. Free ice cream and a concert featuring the Capital City Community Band can be found tonight at the First United Methodist Church on King Street. You’ll find free pool, a nice beer selection, and great drinks at Remedy’s Bar on Williams Street tonight. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates the paper and book sculptures of mother-daughter team, My Thousand Words, at a meet and greet reception tonight. Rich and Robin McGregor, owners of Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery in downtown Carson City, are continuing to ensure no food bowls are empty this holiday season by donating 10 percent of gallery sales to the Friends In Service Helping (FISH) food program, which feeds hungry residents in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

FISH, in cooperation with the City of Carson City and the Red Cross, will be offering a warming shelter in anticipation of the freezing temperatures projected for Tuesday evening.

Tonight’s the night! With one flip of the switch all of downtown joins in the Christmas Spirit. The Silver and Snowflakes Festival includes carols, sleigh rides, hot chocolate, and of course, the lighting of the Capitol. Don’t forget to head to the First Presbyterian Church for the Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser. You’ll get a handmade, hand painted ceramic bowl to keep and lots of yummy food to keep you warm. The talented kids of Wild Horse Children’s Theater hit the stage for opening night of ‘Elf Jr.

The school staff of Bethlehem Lutheran in Carson City challenged their students to raise more than 7,000 cans of food to help FISH provide for those in need with their "Trick or Treat for F.I.S.H." campaign.

If today is any indication of how hard it is going to choose between fun activities, we have a tough few days ahead. The Carson Tahoe Spooktacular is an annual favorite for the kids, complete with treats, activities, and helicopers. It’s Family Night at the RSVP Nevada Day Carnival: thanks to Carson City Toyota-Scion, all rides are just $1. Dayton offers a Haunted Hayride through their old town history. Costumes are encouraged for this family fun event. Root beer floats await at the grand opening celebration of the newly renovated FISH.

The long weekend lets us hold onto summer a little bit longer. Enjoy an interfaith community picnic on the lawn at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Bring something to share, your plates and utensils, and something for the F.I.S.H. food drive. Watch out for playa dust.
