Plan your special day right at the first annual Northern Nevada Wedding Faire, held Sunday, Oct. 2 at Silver Oak Golf Club in Carson City.

A crowd gathered in the courtyard fronting North Carson Street and the Dema Guinn wing of the Nevada State Museum Saturday afternoon in a rededication ceremony marking 150 years since the first stone was laid erecting the historic U.S. Mint building.

Although the fall semester has begun at Western Nevada College, many noncredit educational and self-improvement classes are still available through WNC Continuing Education.

Class offerings range from learning the Washoe language to Tai Chi, to accounting methods designed for small business owners.

Carson City residents got their shred on Saturday during a recycle event and barbecue to benefit Special Olympics of Nevada, raising $1,360 during the event.

Ribs and cantaloupes are on the menu today if you want to head out to Sparks or Fallon, respectively. Stay local and let the Elks Club serve you up some pancakes at their monthly breakfast. Genoa offers up a fun afternoon with friends: Sweet Sippin Sunday begins at 1 p.m. The Summer Concert Series at the Nugget offers up a tribute to Tom Petty and Bob Seger with Double Trouble. There are multiple ways to say farewell to summer this weekend. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off is a local favorite, as is the Fallon Cantaloupe Festival. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 24 2016, 2-5 P.M. to attend the fourth Oh, My Bonnets and Bustles! Fashion Show held at the Governor’s Mansion grounds in Carson City. Silver City, Nevada - Narrative, story-telling visual artist Frances Melhop, voted “One of the World's 200 Best Advertising Photographers 2009/2010″ by Luerzers Archive, will bring her skills and talents to the Resident Artist Program in Silver City this summer. She'll set up a temporary studio at the Silver City School House during August 2016, photographing some of the Comstock’s longtime residents for a 2017 exhibition at the Haldan Art Gallery at Tahoe.

Part art and fashion, metal and mechanics, the Steampunk movement comes to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City for a Father’s day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 18. Historic and futuristic at the same time, the movement melds creativity and imagination with the power of heavy equipment — sort of Victorian Era meets the science fiction.

Into every life a little rain must fall, and we just got plenty. The tulips and lilac blooming around town will be pleased. Unfortunately, it could make for soggy feet if you’ve got any outdoor activities planned. Lucky for us, plenty of fun can be found indoors. The Carson City Charter Review Committee is seeking public input for possible amendments to the Carson City Charter.

The Carson City Fire Department has requested that the Board of Supervisors apply for a grant that would pay for a new ladder truck and a new ambulance for the department’s new Community Paramedicine Program concept.

Founding father Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong has identified a problem in the state capital, and he has proposed a way to solve it, taking Franklin’s advice to heart.

“There are a ton of veterans in this town that no one knows they’re here,” Furlong told a panel of community members Thursday afternoon at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, making specific note of the problem of homelessness among Carson City’s veteran population.

The travels and inventions of J.W. Davis, known as the first fabricator of Levi’s, come to the Nevada State Museum from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Feb. 25, in a talk by genealogist Kathleen P. Clemence.

The inventor of riveted pants came to the American West from Russia, via the Canadian wilderness, Clemence said, with business ventures along the way. A distant relative of Davis’ wife, Annie Packscher, Clemence has conducted extensive research into the intriguing family. Fashion, fabric and function resulted in the work pants that became a famous part of Nevada history.

This week the Carson City Sheriff's Office recognized its outstanding performers for 2015. Each received a plaque and cash award for their contributions to the department and the community.
Of the five nomination categories, one name stood out for nomination for Deputy of the year, Deputy Carl Howell who was killed in the line of duty Aug. 15, 2015.

Randall Hutchison, Orlando, Fla., tied the course record Thursday with a 10-under par 62 to take a two-stroke lead with a 17-under 199 total after 54-holes of Web.com Tour Qualifying at Dayton Valley Golf Club in Nevada. Second round leader Nick Delio, Valencia, Calif., carded a 6-under 66 for second with a 15-under 201 total.

On Wednesday, October 21, Jan Loverin, who has served as curator of the Nevada State Museum’s Marjorie Russel Clothing and Textile Center for over 30 years, will share her extensive expertise on the ‘intimate’ history of men’s and women’s underwear with the Leisure Hour Club. This event will be a perfect way to begin Nevada Day celebrations and will provide an entertaining look at a topic that is ‘never discussed in public.’

A lot of people are asking themselves and the society in which we live this question hours after a fatal mass killing at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

I’m a native Oregonian, born and raised just an hour or two north of Roseburg. My parents called this mill city, situated between the North and South branches of the Umpqua River, home for a few years a decade back. I know the area fairly well. One of my favorite places to visit was Wildlife Safari just a few miles down the road in Winston.

Today, being hungry can be helpful. A benefit for fallen Deputy Carl Howell takes place today at Betsy’s Café inside Slot World with all café proceeds going to his family. Ask Steve Sanchez what inspired him to undertake the arduous road to receiving his tier two sommelier certification, and he immediately says, “because I’m a masochist.”

When Sen. Dean Heller, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and California Gov. Jerry Brown all met up on the shores of Lake Tahoe for their annual Tahoe Summit, attention started with protecting the deep, blue waters of the pristine lake. But this year, attention turned quickly to wildfire.

“Lake Tahoe isn’t going to be blue if the forests are gone,” Graham Kent, director of the University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory, said. “You actually want to keep the Lake Tahoe Basin green — and protected from wildfires.”
