Fire and Snow Warnings highlight Carson City weather through the weekend, which feels right given the state of things

In typical Nevada fashion, there are weather advisories for both fire and snow on the horizon, really cementing in the apocalyptic mood of our current times.

There is a fire weather watch in effect from 2 p.m. Friday through Saturday afternoon due to strong winds and low humidity for all of Western Nevada.

Southwest winds increase today ahead of the oncoming storm hailing from the pacific. Strong gusty winds continue into Saturday with some lower humidity during the day on Friday.

Winds will weaken some for Sunday, but should remain gusty.

Brewery Arts Center debuts female version of 'The Odd Couple' beginning Friday

Step aside Felix and Oscar, Florence and Olive are in town! The female version of The Odd Couple opens February 14 at the Brewery Arts Center and runs 14-16 and 21-23 with doors opening at 7 pm on Friday and Saturday nights at doors at 1:30 pm on Sundays. Show at 7:30 pm and 2:00 pm.

Firefighters use ALERTWildfire cameras to monitor, put brakes on potential catastrophic wildfires

RENO — As fire hazard has built through the summer, ALERTWildfire, a network of mountaintop cameras that helps fire managers spot and monitor fires over large swaths of land, has been on a frenzied pace to reach its goal of adding 300 cameras to the network in the western U.S. by the end of the year. In the past three years the network has been involved with nearly 1,000 fires.

Trailer for 'Top Gun: Maverick' released, scenes filmed at Lake Tahoe and Sierra

The movie trailer for "Top Gun: Maverick" where segments of the production were filmed at Lake Tahoe, was released Thursday by Paramount Pictures.

"Top Gun: Maverick" is the sequel to 1986's blockbuster "Top Gun." In true dramatic fashion, the trailer builds up the story of the Tom Cruise character Maverick as the new flight instructor of the Top Gun school.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has continued to see an increased amount of phone scams. We want the public to remain vigilant and educated in these issues. Scammers are routinely calling people saying they have missed a court date, missed a jury summons, they have a warrant, or they owe fines.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. Wednesday's Denim Day recognized during Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month

Along with Sexual Assault Awareness & Child Abuse Prevention Month recognized through April, Wednesday, April 24 is the 20th anniversary of Denim Day.

For 20 years, the organization Peace Over Violence has organized Denim Day, a rape prevention education campaign, during which community members, elected officials, businesses, and students are encouraged to make a social statement with their fashion choices on this day by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

Carson City HOSA students compete in state competition, take home 6 chapter awards

CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.
