Teacher Appreciation week across the United States was May 7-11, and many teachers in the Carson City School District experienced appreciation unequaled in memory.

Tickets are on sale for the 10th annual Concert Under The Stars, A Benefit for The Greenhouse Project as they welcome Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Jefferson Starship, with special guest Midnight North, Grateful Dead and company’s proteges, Wednesday, July 11 at Brewery Arts Center, Carson City.

Thanks to a grant from Hilton Corporation, the Carson City Chamber Board of Directors is offering Carson City residents enrolled in one of the local high schools or currently employed within the hospitality and tourism industry the opportunity to apply for three $1,165 scholarships to attend the new Truckee Meadows Community College Hospitality and Tourism Management program.

Oh, wow. May is starting off with a bang. Today is jam-packed with options for families, adults, and everyone in-between. The True Grit: Carson City Big Read kicked off yesterday, and today you’ll find the original 1969 version of the film playing at the Brewery Arts Center. The Children’s Museum hosts a Friday Fun Night with a True Grit Buckaroo Sing-a-long. Your options hardly end there. With live music, improv and comedy, theater, karaoke, and some pre-Cinco de Mayo celebrations throughout Carson City and beyond, you’ll have plenty of reasons to hit the town.

The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada is seeking volunteers to assist with the installation of smoke alarms in Gardnerville area homes on Saturday, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The CHS Chamber Orchestra, directed by Dr. Brian Fox, is back from its spring trip to the Bay Area. The Chamber Orchestra competed in the Forum Music Festival at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, earning a gold rating from the adjudicators; the top rating.

Hold onto your hat, Carson City, we’re in for one heck of a weekend. It’ll be cowboy hats and pioneer bonnets in Genoa for Western Heritage Day. Keep an eye out for Mark Twain, plenty of music, and fun for all. The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will feature pianist Alexander Tutunov on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater. Dr. Tutunov will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

The first day of the week marks the end of a season for Youth Theater Carson City. The year featured shows like Singing in the Rain, Jr. and Willy Wonka, Jr, and last summer’s Into the Dark, not to mention performances at Disneyland by their elite troupe: the Showstoppers. Help them celebrate another great year tonight’s Anniversary Bash and Awards Ceremony with show-stopping entertainment and cake. Something’s cooking in Dayton. The monthly Healthy Community’s Coalition’s free cooking class will teach you how to make something new, and then let you try all the dishes, as well.

Carson City’s Big Read Event featuring “True Grit” will kick off May 3 with an exhibit at Western Nevada College displaying artwork made from canceled playing cards from area casinos.

‘Break a leg’ to the talented kids in Wild Horse Children’s Theater. Their newest production, ‘Junie B. Jones, Jr.' opens at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall tonight. The Reno Coin Club has returned to the Nevada State Museum for it’s annual National Coin Week celebration with lectures, demonstrations, and foreign coins for kids. It’s a BINGO kind of night. Dayton High School is raising funds for their Safe Grad Night with a huge raffle and plenty of family-friendly BINGO fun. CARSON CITY — Carson’s Got Talent, an evening extravaganza of regional talent at the Bob Boldrick Theater, April 14 at 6:30 p.m., announced its panel of celebrity judges this week.

The festival will feature rib cookers, arts and crafts vendors, games and prizes, a rib competition, live entertainment and more all weekend long.

The event runs Friday, May 25 from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Well, the expected rain didn’t show up overnight, but that doesn’t mean it’s not on its way. Carson City isn't particularly known for its night or dance clubs. But one local non-profit group caters to the needs of some residents who like to cut a rug or bust a groove for a good time.

There are not many women owned and managed restaurants and as we end Women’s History Month, we wish to highlight one of Carson’s newest woman-owned eateries certain to be a popular gathering place all year long.
