Carson City celebrates National Night Out with new community initiatives

Carson City neighbors by the thousands gathered Tuesday evening at Mills Park for the 11th annual National Night Out.

The themes for the evening were community and neighborhood partnership and outreach. Judging by attendance, it was one of the largest gatherings thus far for the annual summer event, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

"The turnout is one of the biggest I've seen," said DARE officer Lisa Davis, a coordinator of the event. "It says a lot about our citizens who have come together for a cause we all want: A safe and healthy community."

Neighborhood outreach is theme of Carson City Sheriff's National Night Out

With neighborhood outreach as the theme, Carson City Sheriff's Office organizers say the National Night Out event at Mills Park on Tuesday will also highlight a number of new community wide initiatives.

The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and brings thousands of Carson City residents to the park annually in a open house environment, providing partnerships between law enforcement and the community. In Carson City, this event represents the culmination of efforts made to address crime, drugs, and violence and is the largest event of its kind in the area.

Empire Ranch Golf Course vandalized; damages around $150,000

The warming weather has many golfers eager to return to the course, but vandals in Carson City have caused a minor delay of game. "We had 108, carts now we have approximately 93 carts that are working," says Empire Ranch Golf Pro, Sean Boggs.

Exploring Carson River Canyon by raft

Floating down the Carson River in a raft on a semi-warm spring day, the beauty of blooming wildflowers dotting the canyon walls, it's easy to forget the sometimes-bad reputation this area has attained over the years.

Except for the gunfire.

State tourism and Carson City officials are anxious to show off the new Carson River Canyon, a place being transformed into a destination for whitewater adventure and sightseeing, rather than a dumping ground for homeless people and appliances.

In Carson City and Carson Valley, golf courses are vibrant green, fairways lush and putts are rolling smoothly at Divine 9 layouts – the golf season is here and the big winter a distant memory.

Another shot fired in public-private golf battle

Last month, the Carson City Board of Supervisors heard complaints from the owners of two private golf courses about the city subsidizing the operator of the city-owned Eagle Valley Golf courses by forgiving its $200,000 lease payment.

One issue brought up at the time was that the city needs the Eagle Valley courses to help dispose of effluent water from its sewage treatment plant. If Eagle Valley was not operating, then the city would be forced to spend more money to build more storage for the water.

The battle over public vs. private golf

There was a time when the only choice for golfers who couldn't afford to join a country club was to play a municipal course.

That time ended many years ago with the construction of many privately owned golf courses in and around Carson City. For a while, it seemed a new course was being built every year. We were suddenly flush with great courses, and something new to market our area to visitors.

McCulloch 10th, Gingell finishes strong at regional golf tournament

Despite coming up just short in their quest to extend the season one more week, Carson High's Colin McCulloch and Garrett Gingell still managed to finish strong at the Northern 4A Regional Boys Golf Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Empire Ranch Golf Course.
In the process, they gained some valuable experience for the future.

McCulloch has hot hand on chilly opening day at regional golf tournament

After watching rain turn to snow through the afternoon, Colin McCulloch couldn't have been happier when opening round play in the Northern 4A Regional Boys Golf Tournament was finally suspended on Monday afternoon at Empire Ranch Golf Course.
"I'm so cold right now," the Carson High sophomore said afterward, glancing out on a course where snow was starting to stick. "It was pretty tough. Starting on 15, I could barely grip the club."

Parra, Brewer in position to qualify for regional tournament ... there's only one snag

Carson High boys golf teammates Mitch Parra and Niko Brewer will both be in position to earn Northern 4A Regional Tournament qualifying berths when they tee off in their final regular match on Wednesday at ArrowCreek Country Club in Reno.

There's just one downside to this story. Four teams and five individuals from non-qualifying teams will qualify for the regional tournament next week at Empire Ranch Golf Course -- and in all likelihood only one of them will make the cut for an individual berth. Parra, a junior, currently holds the No.

However, the door remains open for some of the Senators to qualify as individuals as they preparer for the home stretch of their season.
