A month after the November 2018 election, I wrote an analysis of the results of recent statewide elections. From total statewide voter turnout data, I came to one clear conclusion: 2014 was the outlier year and the most recent results were quite in line with the long-term trends in Nevada.

According to the Carson City Board of Supervisors and Board of Health agenda for the upcoming Feb. 21 meeting, the University of Nevada, Reno Police will begin staffing the Western Nevada Campus by July 1, 2019 in an Interlocal Agreement for operational support between the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the University of Nevada, Reno Police Services.

Our new governor and legislature have begun to meet in session and show their true colors. It is not a pretty sight. One of their first acts this past week, by a party-line vote, was to pass legislation they characterized as “closing the gun show loophole” and “common sense gun regulation.” With a title like that, you know there’s nothing “common sensical” about it.

Today will bring partly sunny skies with a high around 53. There's a slight chance of rain Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the 50s. Another winter storm is lurking out toward the end of the week so stay tuned.

Doug Goodman, founder of Nevadans for Election Reform, will be the featured speaker at Monday's luncheon sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee of Carson City.

Goodman's group advocates for replacing primary elections with a ranked-choice system in which voters would select three candidates in order of preference. The candidate receiving the least votes would be eliminated from the count, with his or her preferences distributed to the other candidates, a process that would be repeated until one achieves a majority.

The first Carson City School District School Board Meeting of 2019 will be held Tuesday, Jan. 8 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street, at 7 p.m.

The winners of the 2018 contested Carson City elections are Stacey Giomi for Carson City Board of Supervisors Ward 1, Kristin Luis for Carson City Justice of the Peace Department 2, and Kenny Furlong for Carson City Sheriff.

Friday, Nov. 2 is the last day for early voting in the 2018 Nevada mid-term general elections, which began Saturday, October 20.

There's a lot of chatter right now about voting, especially with one particular statewide ballot initiative coming up for public vote on Nov. 6.

The Carson City Chamber Board of Directors announced its decision Tuesday to encourage its membership and residents to vote "no" on Question 3, the Energy Initiative.

Ballot Question 3 is receiving a lot of air time from both sides, convincing you to vote for or against this complex initiative that would amend the Declaration of Rights within the Nevada Constitution should the voters vote in favor of a competitive retail energy market.

In the upcoming midterm election Nevada voters will be faced a question of tax exemption. If adopted, Question 2 would create a state and local sales tax exemption for feminine hygiene products.

In 1983, Marsy Nicholas was a senior at UC Santa Barbara, but her life was cut short when she was stalked and murdered by her ex-boyfriend.
