A 73-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly pointing a gun at a man after a dispute about dogs defecating on a lawn, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

One of our fairly new clients had a pleasant surprise recently. We finally got more information on her life and situation. It turns out since she is over age 66 and had been married a long time ago to a man that worked for wages that were subject to Social Security tax. She was divorced years ago but had been married for more than 10 years.

I have written previously that my parents were divorced when I was 14. Following the announcement, Dad moved into the only hotel in our town which was above the bowling alley. I visited him there frequently in the evenings and on weekends although my mother had a cow, because the bowling alley was also a bar. His room was so small and cramped; you could barely turn around in it.

Dayton residents were treated Saturday to a day-long celebration of the town, circa 1864, with “Discover Gold in Dayton, Again,” a living-history event presented by The Historical Society of Dayton Valley to commemorate the town’s many firsts in Nevada’s history: as the location of the first gold discovery which took place in 1849; as the first permanent settlement, founded in 1851; as the site of Lyon County’s first courthouse, opened in 1864; and also as the site of Nevada’s first marriage and first divorce.

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley hosts “Discover Gold in Dayton, Again,” as part of the Nevada 150th celebration, Saturday, May 17 in Old Town Dayton. Everyone is invited to come celebrate the community’s “firsts."

It is the location of Nevada’s first gold discovery which took place in 1849. It was the Silver State’s first permanent settlement, founded in 1851 and is the site of Lyon County’s first courthouse, opened in 1864. It is also the site of Nevada’s first marriage and ironically, the first divorce, as well, Docent Lauri Emerich, said. “We have a lot to celebrate.”

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. To kick off the celebration, there will be a monthlong Historic Resources Commission Scavenger Hunt in Carson City and other events around northern Nevada.

In recognition of the state’s sesquicentennial, Changing Faces and Places: Making Nevada is the second in a series of three Special Collections and University Archives exhibits commemorating 150 years of Nevada history at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.

I can remember when, as a young child, I had small square wooden building blocks with painted letters and numbers on all the sides. They were about an inch and a half square. I could use them to learn to count or learn the ABC’s or make words. I could also stack them up and make buildings or forts. Their use was as unlimited as my imagination.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Consumers who have suffered an “extraordinary life event” may now ask their insurance company to provide an exception to the use of their credit information for underwriting and rating purposes, which may otherwise result in an increase in their premium rate.

“This is an important chance for some Nevadans who have suffered an unfortunate event to find relief during these trying economic times,” said Commissioner Scott J. Kipper of the Nevada Division of Insurance.
