National Birth Defects Prevention Month highlights medication use during pregnancy

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is joining over 350 members of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network to share the message that women of childbearing age should talk with a health care provider about which medications are safe to take while pregnant.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month, and this year’s campaign focuses on medication use before, during, and after pregnancy.

Juvenile Diabetes Walk for a Cure

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is putting on a walk to raise money to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes on March 5th at 11:30 am at Carson High School. Sign up to walk at http://jdrfevents.donordrive.com. Click on the HOSA JDRF walk. The goal is to raise $10,000 for JDRF. Walkers who raise $25 will earn a t-shirt. Come help find a cure for juvenile diabetes.

Affordable Help for Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment During the Holidays and Year Round In Nevada

At least 24 million people in the U.S. struggle with addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The good news is that millions in recovery stand as evidence that there is hope – people can stop using, reconnect with family, and go on to productive, happy lives. The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is one group promoting the fact that recovery is possible, prevention works and treatment is effective.

Group Urges Nevadans to Reach Out for Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment

Christy McGill likes to use a gardening metaphor when she explains Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey's mission to reduce substance abuse and promote recovery.

“The Coalition is planting the seeds of hope that alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse prevention works, treatment is effective, and people do recover,” said McGill, who serves as director.

Diabetes Fair and Symposium

In honor of National Diabetes Month, Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare will once again be hosting the Northern Nevada Annual Diabetes Fair and Symposium. Foot screening, blood glucose screening, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, body composition analysis and arm chair massage. The event will be held at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center, Main Lobby, 1600 Medical Parkway in Carson City. Call (775) 445-8607.

September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, and Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey is celebrating the month by “planting the seeds of hope” that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people do recover.

Douglas authorities seek help in locating missing 76-year-old Indian Hills woman

A 76-year-old Indian Hills woman, who reportedly suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, is missing and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in finding her. 
The woman, Ada Cordero, was reported missing by her daughter this Sunday afternoon and was last seen at 7:30 a.m. by her daughter, according to a press statement.

Aramark picked by Carson City school committee for food services

A committee designed to look at outsourcing Carson City School District's food service program has tentatively selected Aramark as a provider, district officials told board members tonight. Under terms of a possible contract, district food workers would not lose their jobs.
A contract between Aramark and the district could be presented to the school board by the end of the month.
Three proposals have been on the table, including food service companies Sodexo and Chartwells. The school district will begin a series of negotiations with Aramark to establish a contract.
