A community policing citizens academy program of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, through the development of the Volunteers in Police Service Program, will run from August to October, officials announced Monday.

Take it easy today, that’s what Sundays are for. An afternoon porch party at the historic Genoa Bar combines live music by Deception and slushy rum runners. Dutch oven cooking is a camp-time favorite, and the rangers at Mormon Station State Park will be giving a demonstration on how easy and delicious it can be. What to do, what to do? That’s the question that starts most every weekend. If you’ve got kids, test their mettle at the annual Capitol City Triathlon. Open to kids of all ages, they will bike, run, and swim their way to the finish line. The third annual Sassabration event kicks off with a multi-colored, costume bike parade from the Brewery Arts Center to the celebration at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint. Multiple bands, vendors, non-profit booths, free swimming at the Carson Hot Springs, not to mention the yummy food and drink available make this a not-to-be-missed festival.

A free Western Heritage Celebration returns to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 22, beginning at 11:00 am.

The event’s second year will include a heritage quilting presentation, a Victorian dressing presentation, songs about local history and cowboy poetry, as well as gold panning and other children’s activities.

Let the good times roll. Head over to Mills Park in Carson City for the annual RSVP Carnival and catch some high-flying skate-boarding action. You’ll find the historic Wungnema House open for tours at the very east end of the park. One price gets you unlimited rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and plenty of photo opportunities with their historic steamer. On a star-spangled Fourth of July weekend, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will be showcasing an all-star lineup of its rolling stock and giving visitors discounted rates for unlimited train rides.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is hosting an Open House and demonstration of disc golf at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2 to 5 p.m. this Sunday, July 2.

Planes, trains, and automobiles take over Carson City this weekend. Steampunk ‘N’ Trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum features train rides, fun costumes, food trucks and more. You’ll find two car shows in town – the Party at the Pavilion as part of the Nevada State Fair and the Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show at the Carson Nugget. TUESDAY:

DAYTON, Nev. – Join a park ranger at Dayton State Park to learn the history and techniques of Dutch oven cooking. Park staff will serve samples while supplies last.

This weekend is for all of the moms out there, and the dads that are also moms, and the women who hold a special place of honor in our hearts. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. Find something pretty for her garden at the Spring Plant Sale that the Greenhouse Project hosts each year. Join Park Rangers at Mormon Station State Historic Park for a Dutch oven cooking demonstration. Rangers will prepare a cast iron elk roast with sides, and samples will be served as long as the food lasts.

Participants will learn about the cooking techniques used by pioneers in the 1850s as they came through the Carson Valley on their way to California. Dutch oven cooking is a great way to bring the family together for a meal. It can be used in the backyard or out on camping trips.

Hundreds of Nevada law enforcement officers were in Carson City Thursday to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to memorialize a North Las Vegas Police detective who died earlier this year.

The names of all fallen peace officers killed in the line duty throughout state history were read Wednesday night in a public gathering that precedes the 20th Annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday on the Capitol grounds in Carson City.

Two events will be held in Carson City this Wednesday and Thursday as part of the 2017 Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony, said Memorial Historian Frank Adams.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H's Capital City Farm Days in Carson City is set for April 20-21. There will be 28 presenters teaching elementary-age youth about Nevada agriculture, where food and fiber come from, and environmental issues related to agriculture.

The small campus keeps a small population of up to 200 where students get personalized learning, smaller student to teacher ratios, and the option to earn 9 or more high school or dual college credits per year.

Mile High Jazz Band Association and Carson City will present the 14th Annual Jazz and Beyond Festival, featuring 18 days of music, art and film at multiple venues in the capital city, Aug. 4-21.

Nevada has been selected as one of eight states to participate in a two-year certified community behavioral health clinic demonstration program designed to improve community services, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday.

Historian and lecturer Mike Thomas will talk on “The Roswell UFO Incident” on Saturday, Sept 10 at Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College.
