Nevada Day theme celebrates the Silver State's 'Great Outdoors'

It only takes four days to celebrate statehood in Nevada. The Silver State knows how to party! The annual Carson City Nevada Day events will observe the 147th year since joining the union, with the theme, “Nevada's Great Outdoors,” Oct. 27-30, 2011.

A four-day celebration of the Silver State's admission to the Union in 1864 will be celebrated the last weekend in October in Nevada's state capitol of Carson City.

Leading GOP Candidates For Heller Congressional Seat Face Off In Tame Debate

RENO – For the three leading Republican candidates seeking the Congressional District 2 seat vacated with the appointment of Dean Heller to the U.S. Senate, it was all about qualifications and experience in a debate held here Wednesday.
State Republican Party Chairman Mark Amodei, a former state senator, state Sen. Greg Brower, appointed to fill the seat formerly held by retired Sen. Bill Raggio, and retired Navy commander Kirk Lippold, faced off ahead of a GOP meeting Saturday in Sparks that could determine which candidate will get the party nod.

Sharron Angle decides not to run for Congress

Sharron Angle, who previously said she was going to run for Nevada's 2nd District Congressional seat, decided today to skip the race.

Her exit was good news for establishment Republicans who worried her presence would split the vote and open the door for a Democrat to win this seat for the first time.

Outdoors with Don Q: Six-day tour of Northern Nevada

Beginning Wednesday, May 18 and ending on Sunday, May 22, Elaine and I took her 82-year-old Mom, Mary Bottoms, on a six-day tour of rural Nevada. It was her first-ever trip to all kinds of interesting places.

She has been a permanent resident of this state for the last 3.5 years, and prior to moving here from Greeley, Colo., she had visited us in Carson City a number of times. Those visits had been made by either train or bus and were always along the I-80 corridor from Wendover to Reno. That was all she had ever seen of the State of Nevada until this particular trip.

Bridgeport Hunter/Author Wins Book Award

Paul, 75, in an interview before a breakfast at the Washoe County Republican Party office, formed an official exploratory committee on Tuesday in advance of GOP debates set for May.

Winnemucca 5th grader wins poster contest

Sometimes you never know what a kid will remember from a fishing trip.
Fifth grader Kepa Bengochea loves going fly fishing with her grandfather Steve Swecker. On one fishing trip she remembers fishing next to a huge tree. Throughout the day, she would sit and lean against the tree.
So when her fifth grade class at French Ford Middle School in Winnemucca began drawing their entries for this year’s Free Fishing Day Poster Contest, she incorporated that tree into her drawing.
