Virginia City prepares for July 4 with parade, Old West celebration on the boardwalk

Fourth of July on the Comstock rocks. Virginia City offers one of the region’s longest firework displays. Echoing off Mt. Davidson for nearly 30 minutes, you'll feel the boom in your bones this July 4 as the fireworks soar high above the town and into Six Mile Canyon, making it visible from nearly anywhere in town.

With a nod to Virginia City’s lively popular culture and lengthy history, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] announces its exhibition, Mark Twain’s Suicide Table Blood Bucket Ghost Bonanza Amen, by artist Justin Favela at St. Mary’s Art Center from June 29 – August 30, 2014.

St. Mary’s Art Center is located at 55 North R Street, Virginia City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Thursday – Sunday, 11am – 4pm.

Saturday Bingo Raises Money for Scholarships

Soroptimist International of the Comstock, presents a a fun-filled family bingo night, Saturday, June 7 at the Dayton Senior Center. Many great prizes are available. and all proceeds will go to scholarships.

Dayton Historical Society hosts 'Discover Gold in Nevada, Again' a Living History Event, Saturday

The Historical Society of Dayton Valley hosts “Discover Gold in Dayton, Again,” as part of the Nevada 150th celebration, Saturday, May 17 in Old Town Dayton. Everyone is invited to come celebrate the community’s “firsts."

It is the location of Nevada’s first gold discovery which took place in 1849. It was the Silver State’s first permanent settlement, founded in 1851 and is the site of Lyon County’s first courthouse, opened in 1864. It is also the site of Nevada’s first marriage and ironically, the first divorce, as well, Docent Lauri Emerich, said. “We have a lot to celebrate.”

From the front, St. Mary’s Art and Retreat Center is the epitome of Virginia City’s Old West heritage. But take a peak around back and you’ll find an energy source that’s anything but old-fashioned.

Reno nonprofit Black Rock Solar just completed construction of a 110-panel ground-mount photovoltaic array at the National Historic Landmark, built in 1875. The 30-kW array will generate enough energy to cover almost all the electricity costs of the former Comstock hospital.

Douglas hosts AYSO 'SoccerFest 14' pick-up game Saturday at Lampe Park

SoccerFest 14, billed as the biggest pick-up game on Earth, will be held Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

Local players from Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties will join fellow AYSO players from throughout the region as part of a nationwide event that will take place in hundreds of communities. This year's SoccerFest is part of AYSO's 50th anniversary celebration.

Remains of Vietnam Vet Missing Since 1980 Found

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Northern Nevada sheriff's deputies are investigating the suspected murder of a highly-decorated Vietnam veteran whose remains were found in a septic tank near the Comstock mining town of Virginia City nearly 34 years after he disappeared.

Dozens of teams, hundreds of players in Carson City for AYSO boys soccer tourney

Dozens of boys soccer teams from Nevada, California and Idaho are in Carson City this weekend for the second round of the 21st annual AYSO Comstock Shootout Soccer Tournament.

Hosted by the Carson City American Youth Soccer Organization Region #140 and Carson Futbol Club, the weekend tournament at Edmonds Sports Complex brings hundreds of players from three states to compete in a series of shootout competitions. It is recognized as one of the largest competitions of its kind in region, said tournament director Molly Walt.

Comstock Shootout soccer tournament kickoff weekend in Carson City underway

Dozens of teams, hundreds of players and car loads of parents arrived in Carson City this weekend for the 21st annual Comstock Shootout Soccer Tournament.

Hosted by the Carson City American Youth Soccer Organization Region #140 and Carson Futbol Club, around 80 soccer teams are playing in the girl’s tournament this weekend with 68 boys teams set to play April 25-26. The tournament is an open tournament sanctioned by AYSO and US Club Soccer.

Fundraiser Proceeds Preserves Comstock History

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture raised $15,003 for nine organization within the Comstock Historic District. The Comstock Foundation matched donations up to $1,000 for each organization.

The fundraising event was part of a commemoration of the restoration of the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute in Gold Hill, the Foundation’s first substantial preservation project since organizing in June 2013. Work on the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute cost roughly $100,000.

Feel the heat at Virginia City's 31st annual Chili on the Comstock

Ralph Denny, Sr.: A good man among our common men

Saturday, I attended a funeral in a somewhat cheerful mood. It was a celebration of the life of Ralph Denny, Sr., and he would have wanted it upbeat.

Over 350 people filled Carson City’s First Christian Church’s sanctuary and foyer. Ralph was not a celebrity or public figure, and few such folks were there – just the heart and soul of our local communities in abundance.
He was a fine man with such a great and joyous impact over 50 years on so many folks that most came in the same mood as me: sad to see Ralph gone, but feeling so much richer for knowing him, and wanting to celebrate him.

Carson City has maintained a small-town feel since 1858

Some locals still occasionally call it Eagle Valley, and others may remember it as Ormsby County, but by any name, Nevada’s state capital has a reputation as a great place to live or visit.

Filled with history primarily through its connections to the discovery of the Comstock Lode next door in Storey County in 1859, Carson City is known for the state Capitol, the rebuilt Virginia &Truckee Railroad and as a one-time home to American author and humorist Mark Twain.

V&T Wine, Cheese and Dessert Train set for April 12

The Fifth Annual V&T Wine, Cheese and Dessert Train, sponsored by the Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary, will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014.

The Train departs Carson City Eastgate Depot at 10:00am for a trip through the Comstock to Virginia City and will return to Carson City at 3:00pm. Tickets are $70.00 per person. Ticket includes: Wine, Cheese and Dessert to and from Virginia City, lunch in Virginia City, a shuttle to and from the Virginia City station to Main Street, plus other amenities.

Lyon County master plan vote draws legal fire from residents

At the Lyon County Commission meeting January 2, the commissioners voted 4-1 to grant a request from Comstock Mining Inc., to modify the county Master Plan and change the zoning, which would allow pit mining in and adjacent to Silver City.

Four of the Commissioners ignored the recommendation of the Planning Commission and the express wishes of the citizens of Silver City and voted without explanation to abandon precedent and acquiesce to the company's desires.

Carson/Storey Annual 4-H Awards Night

The Carson/Storey 4-H Council held their Annual Awards Night on Jan. 26, 2014. The event was conducted in the Fuji Park Pavilion. Members of the Silver Sage 4-H Community Club served as emcees.

Youth and leaders of the following clubs received recognition for their number of years in a project: Arrowhead Livestock, Bouncing Bunnies, Bug Huggers, Carson Cluckers, Carson Hot Shots, Comstock Hot Shots, 4-Paws, Silver Sage 4-H Community Club (SSCC), 4-H Sewing Project, and the Target Rippers.

Virginia City hopes to lure Lake Tahoe skiers with winter trolley, Ponderosa mine tours

Virginia City is offering lift tickets of the public transit and tour variety with the launch of the Comstock Lift Ticket that takes visitors on a ride through the high desert historic mining town east of Lake Tahoe.

The ticket gives visitors a 2.5-mile trolley ride, including a 20-minute narrated tour through Virginia City, a tour of the Ponderosa Mine as well as specials on lodging at any number of hotels, motels, restaurants and merchants.

Lyon commissioners OK Comstock Mining master plan amendment, zone change

In a 4 to 1 decision the Lyon County Board of Commissioners on Thursday approved a Master Plan Amendment and zone change sought by Comstock Mining.

Commissioners took testimony 4.5 hours of testimony in regards to Comstock Mining’s application for a Master Plan Amendment and Zone Change. The chambers and hallways filled with about 250 residents.

Christmas in the Sierra Concert

“Christmas in the Sierra Concert, featuring David John and the Comstock Cowboys with special guest Molly Malone, returns to the Historic Genoa Town Hall on Saturday, December 14th. There will be performances at 5 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. There will also be a No Host Bar inside the Town Hall.
