Wired Wednesday presents Starting from Scratch: making a short film. Are you, or someone you know, interested in making short films?

Coming Tuesday, May 7 our first in a series of “How To” talks, will be 12 steps to making a short film, as well as competition and challenge basics.

The Carson City Photo Club has announced the winners of its monthly photo competition with the chosen theme of "motion" that photographers were tasked. The winning pictures are:

Headed into Saturday, April 27, 2019 we're looking at another picture-perfect spring weather day and cool overnight temperatures. There's lots of activities ahead, including a colorful fun run at Mills Park, a free paper and document recycling event hosted by Debug Computer, a prescription drug roundup, the Silver State's own celebration of the Aloha State, a Carson High School speech team fundraiser at Flavors of India, art showings and sales and a fundraiser at Flat Earth Pizza for a wonderful Carson City woman who is in the throes of cancer. The Carson High School Speech and Debate team is inviting the community to Flavors of India between 5 - 6:30 p.m., 1105 S. Carson St., Carson City.

Come enjoy delicious food, live entertainment and great conversations.

They are raising money to send qualifying students to the National Speech and Debate competition in Dallas, TX, this June.

Buffet tickets are $25 at the door or you can purchase them in advance. Thank you for your support.

Ahead of next week’s Miss USA Competition, happening on Thursday in Reno, each competing representative from across the country gathered in Carson City on Thursday at the Nevada State Legislature and Nevada State Capitol building to meet with representatives of the Nevada government.

According to Ivet Contreras of IC Media Strategy, the fact that Nevada’s State Senate has a female-led majority, the first in the U.S., was a part of the decision to tour the government grounds today.

In an era where students are more comfortable communicating behind a screen rather than face-to-face, teaching Physical Education can be more than challenging at times. It seems that each year there are fewer students who enjoy physical activity. This year has been no different.

Northern Nevada area students gathered at Western Nevada College Thursday to participate in the annual SkillsUSA competition, a national competition held at local, state, and national levels in the field of welding.

Not only is it a competition, but a networking opportunity as well for students who anticipate joining the workforce as skilled welding technicians.

National Weather Service forecasters say it will be a breezy day with some rain. But don't let that dampen your day as there's art showings, live music and hilarious comedy venues at the Brewery Arts Center and Carson Nugget.

RENO — The month of April welcomes Nevada’s second annual Donor Duel, a friendly competition between students, alumni and supporters of the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to see which group can register the most people as organ, eye and tissue donors.

The 2018/2019 Para Sport season wrapped up this past weekend in a thrilling two days of competition, on American home ice in Lake Placid, NY.

For the Americans, Steven Jacobo established himself early as the frontrunner for Team USA, closing out the season with an eighth place finish on his home track. He rallied for the third fastest time of the fourth and final heat to show his promise in the sport.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

Local restaurant and brewery, The Fox Brewpub, will hold a fundraiser for a local family whose daughter was recently diagnosed with cancer on Saturday, April 6 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.

The event, which will raise funds for ten year-old Aylee Sharron, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and is the daughter of Mariel and Tony Sharron, will feature a raffle and live-music.

Mile High Band Association’s 2019 Jazz and Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for Carson-Tahoe area artists. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover.

A T-shirt may also feature one of the designs submitted.

The entry deadline is May 15th, 2019.

On April 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. a Trash Dash Competition will be hosted by Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space, with prizes awarded in three categories. Participants must find as much trash as they can, but prizes will also be awarded to most interesting find, and largest item.

CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Farm boxes, also known as CSA or Community Shared Agriculture, were introduced in the 1980s but are challenged today by competition from local delivery services and changing consumer demands.

Now there are nine. Blake Shelton and Lionel Richie were added to Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series on Monday.

CHS celebrated its Second Annual Carson Unplugged event this past week where staff and students were encouraged to unplug from technology and be present in the moment, enjoying more face-to-face interactions and less screen time.

CARSON CITY — Vanessa Aponte, a senior at Legacy High School in Las Vegas, is the 2019 Nevada State champion of Poetry Out Loud. The statewide competition for high school students started in the fall with more than 3,500 participants and narrowed to nine regional finalists for Saturday’s championships at the studios of KNPB Channel 5 Public Broadcasting in Reno.

The 28th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Virginia City rocked, rolled and bounced Saturday among the thousands of partygoers who arrived in the famed Comstock town to celebrate a cuisine tradition of the Old West and swill some good ole' fashion Irish cheer.

The CHS teacher of the year is Astronomy, Honors Physics, and head CHS Freshman Football Coach James Bean Jr. Born in Okinawa, Japan where his dad, a Marine, met his mother, Bean moved back to the US when he was 4-years-old.

There's a new Mr. Carson High in town.

Cameron Rudy was crowned Mr. Carson High 2019 Friday at the Carson City Community Center in Carson City.

The Carson City School Board will host its next meeting on March 12 at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Topics to discuss will include the Superintendent’s Report, which will go over the NJROTC Orienteering Team and the report from the national competition. In addition, the Carson City High School Cheer Team and the recognition of third place winner at the USA Spirit Nationals Competition will be discussed.
