Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has announced two job opportunities that have become available. The organization is dedicated to serving the needs of the homeless and hungry individuals and families in Carson City.

Sunday is the day before Independence Day, but Sparks is getting a jump on the festivities with their Star Spangled Sparks Celebration and fireworks. King’s Beach always celebrates early, so you can catch fireworks at the northeast end of Tahoe, as well. Keep reading: the weekend is in full swing.

Holy moly. Carson City is hopping with fun times for everyone. Enjoy Saturday downtown with the Third and Curry Farmers Market, the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, and a free concert at the Brewery Arts Center. Mills Park features the return of the RSVP Carnival with rides, food, booths, games, and more.

The weekend isn’t over, but it’s beginning to wind down. Catch the Pet Parade as part of Dayton’s Oodles of Noodles Festival. Everyone is welcome to join in at the BMX Track at the Livermore Sports Complex: Olympic Day means free racing and no membership required. Nancy Morgan, Co-Founder of WCEI, and David A. Johnson DMD, FAAFP, Healogics Physician of the Year recipient and Regional Medical Director at the Carson Tahoe Center for Wound Healing, Carson City, will be co-speakers of the event.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Residents in Carson City now have an option for spaying and neutering feral cats. A mobile veterinary clinic, specially designed for spay/neuter services, was recently built for Nevada Humane Society thanks to a grant which covered the cost of the vehicle.

Northern Nevadans fighting against Parkinson's Disease have a new ally in their corner.

Francisco Rodriguez, owner of Tazmanian Boxing Club in North Carson City, recently earned national certification to train individuals suffering from Parkinson's Disease, a distinction that makes him unique among other area boxing coaches and trainers.

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month, as good a time as any to become more aware of what mental illness is, what it isn't, and the challenges that those struggling with it face every day.

Mental illness has touched my family. It has touched me.

Pets of the Homeless and its partners are hosting a free wellness clinic. The clinic will be on a first come, first serve basis for the first 100 pets. There will be free vaccinations, exams, pet food, supplies and nail trims.
The event is Saturday, May 21, 2016 beginning at 9 a.m. at FISH, 138 East Long St., Carson City.

A 46-year-old Silver Springs man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of heroin and methamphetamine possession and other charges after eluding an officer and allegedly holding a baggy of drugs in his mouth, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

This August, two 2016 CHS graduates, and a student who finished her sophomore year, will begin another year of high school in a new country, learning a new language, and living with a different family.

Seniors MacKenzie Gilliam and Delaney Fine, and sophomore Alexa Conrad, were chosen for the Rotary exchange program. Gilliam will be going to Italy, Fine to Belgium and Conrad to Leon, France.

After that cold snap earlier this week, it’s time to go enjoy the sunshine. Spend the afternoon cheering on the WNC Wildcats as they take on Salt Lake Community College. Last week we began the lifesaving adventure of Carson, a handsome, young tabby cat who was hit by a car in Carson City.

His injuries were severe — bruising and scrapes all over the body, a broken jaw and two broken front legs. We fixed up his jaw here at our Nevada Humane Society veterinary clinic and then sent him to a local specialist—Sierra Veterinary Specialists. We told you his outcome was good, but we left you hanging for the next step of his adventure. Well, wait no more.

Lifesaving at Nevada Humane Society doesn’t stop; in fact, more often than not, multiple animals are in need of special surgeries all at the same time. Recently, Donner the puppy made headlines and is currently recovering from surgery. Today, Carson the cat is beginning his journey, and, just like Donner’s did, it begins with a rough start.

Carson Tahoe Health has once again partnered with the Shriners Hospitals for Children to provide free orthopedic screenings to eligible patients under the age of 18.

Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will make stops next month in Carson City and Yerington, officials announced Wednesday.

The mobile Mammovan aims to make mammography services accessible and convenient for women by visiting locations across Nevada. These screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 who have a physician referral.
