Open Letter to the Carson City Library Board of Trustees

Your recent decision has stunned the residents of Virginia City, and, I hope, has dismayed the residents of Carson City into weighing in on your indefensible action.

On 26 July 2012, your agenda item was as follows:

'In May of 2012 Storey County voted to close the Storey County Public Library, (sic) Carson City Library Board of Trustees should consider a policy on a fee for issuing library cards to Nevada jurisdictions not providing any level of library service to their residents. (Action)'

Movie Review: 'Star Wars: The Phantom Menance' rages again in 3D

I was busy some other place when "Star Wars, The Phantom Menace" opened in 1999 in the USA. Lucky me. Not so lucky now when I went to see the reworked original decked out in 3D. It's a corny movie and the 3D adds little to the viewing except for the $3 extra per ticket. At the Galaxy Fandango in Carson City you can see the release without 3D and you won't be missing much.

Movie Review: 'New Year's Eve' enjoyable despite lack of plot

Sometimes watching a dreck movie and enjoying it can be embarrassing. Such is the case with "New Year's Eve," a multifaceted comedy of sorts playing at the Fandango Galaxy cinema in Carson City. The cast is all-star, from Hilary Swank to Robert De Niro. And while the film is pure twaddle, director Gary Marshall keeps all the balls in the air. And he should be able to; he made the same movie last year on a Valentine's Day theme.

Movie Review: 'Cowboys and Aliens' make for strange, entertaining summertime cinema

The sci-fi-western-thriller "Cowboys & Aliens," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, finally achieves what most studios have long sought: a film with five writers, muc...

Movie Review: 'Horrible Bosses' a look back at the Three Stooges

The aptly if crudely named "Horrible Bosses," now playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, could be taken as an update on the Three Stooges, with Jason Bateman as Nick Hendricks, Charlie Dale as Dale Arbus and Jason Sudekis as Ken Buckman. Stooges fans may resent the comparison but it's pretty accurate, even down to the facial slaps of Curly, Moe and Larry.

Here Nick is bypassed by a conniving boss David Harken (Kevin Spacey) who gives himself the job Nick has been waiting for. Kurt is bypassed as company president.

Movie Review: 'Drive Angry' the ultimate car chase film

The movie "Drive Angry," currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is practically one long car-chase movie, starring Nicholas Cage and Amber Heart.

To fully enjoy this film you have to believe totally that there is an actual physical Heaven and Hell, not that the two are metaphors of consciousness. But don't fret about it; religious ideas don't count here.
