More events added to Nevada's 150th statehood celebration

NNDA awarded $600K EPA grant designed for Lyon, Churchill county redevelopment sites
Submitted by editor on Thu, 06/05/2014 - 1:23pmNorthern Nevada Development Authority was recently awarded a $600,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will be used to identify underused redevelopment sites in Lyon and Churchill counties.
The assessment grant allows NNDA to evaluate and catalog areas that had been considered environmentally contaminated. The grant will be used as a future road map for redeveloping effected sites and is the first step in creating projects directly geared toward economic development.

NHP: Florida woman dies in Highway 50 rollover east of Fallon
Submitted by editor on Wed, 05/21/2014 - 4:40pmA 75-year-old Florida woman died in a rollover vehicle accident Wednesday on Highway 50 east of Fallon in Churchill County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Mary Madsen of Mount Dora, Fla., died in the single vehicle accident reported at 10:15 a.m. near mile marker 63. Her husband and driver of the vehicle, Leslie Madsen, 77, received non-life threatening injuries in the accident, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson.

Carson City scavenger hunt celebrates historic Nevada preservation and archaeology

To kick off the celebration, there will be a monthlong Historic Resources Commission Scavenger Hunt in Carson City and other events around northern Nevada.
Organizations and agencies have maintained a long tradition to promote history and spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state, encouraging both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Nevada bicycle and pedestrian leaders recognized for advocacy

Awards were presented at the 12th annual Nevada Bicycle and Pedestrian Summit in Reno. The board praised individuals, agencies and groups for improving bicycle and pedestrian facilities, safety and advocacy.
Man booked into Carson City Jail on Wyoming felony warrant

John Paul Stewart was booked by the Carson City Sheriff's Office jail staff. The warrant was filed for record March 18, 2013 out of Campbell County, Wyo. Stewart will be extradited.
Lyon County Board of Commissioners OK tentative budget without employee cuts

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension offers ag producers workshops on dealing with drought

Topics will include water availability, recommended irrigation practices, insurance options and an outlook on prices. The first workshop will be March 20 in Fallon.

Fire at Bango oil refining plant near Fallon, 1 injury reported, 3 air ambulances respond

Local Companies Recognized at the NNDA Pioneer Awards

This signature event also saw the largest attendance for this event in NNDA history with over 340 celebrating these announcements. In addition to this annual recognition businesses were selected in 9 different categories. For six weeks NNDA collected over 50 nominees in those categories with the winners being announced at the Pioneer Awards Banquet.
Carson City man jailed on felony warrant for being a sex offender failing to change address
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 09/19/2013 - 3:46pmA Carson City man turned himself into authorities Wednesday for an outstanding felony warrant, being a sex offender failing to change his address, issued out of Churchill County.
David Alan Wilson II, 30, turned himself into the front counter of the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 12:35 p.m. on the warrant service confirmed out of New River Township Justice Court as a sex offender failing to change address. Bail is $25,000 bondable. He was taken into custody without incident.

Carson City area air quality to fluctuate between 'very unhealthy' and 'unhealthy'
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 08/26/2013 - 1:26pmAir quality in Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County will likely straddle between "unhealthy" and "very unhealthy" conditions through at least the week, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection reports.
Smoke and ash from the Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park is being pushed in the atmosphere directly over the region causing extremely elevated amounts of particulate matter. The levels of particulate matter equate to “Very Unhealthy” on the Air Quality Index (AQI) level of health concern, according to a news release.

Carson City celebrates National Night Out with new community initiatives
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 08/06/2013 - 11:49pmCarson City neighbors by the thousands gathered Tuesday evening at Mills Park for the 11th annual National Night Out.
The themes for the evening were community and neighborhood partnership and outreach. Judging by attendance, it was one of the largest gatherings thus far for the annual summer event, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
"The turnout is one of the biggest I've seen," said DARE officer Lisa Davis, a coordinator of the event. "It says a lot about our citizens who have come together for a cause we all want: A safe and healthy community."
Letter: UN Agenda 21 ideology overtakes sage grouse debate
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 07/30/2013 - 5:53pmI attended a meeting of the Sagebrush Ecosystem Council July 30 (my third) in Carson City. Like a lot of things that go on in government, few readers will have heard of the council.
It was set up late last year by Gov. Sandoval in an effort to forestall the feds' putting the sage grouse on the endangered species list, a measure that would declare large swaths of Nevada off limits to business and recreation.
The Legislature earmarked $304 million to fund the council.
