The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.

The Northern Nevada Dream Center is partnering with CHS Culinary Arts students for the 5th annual Pie to the Rescue.

Students from the awarding winning Carson High School Culinary Arts program will be joining some of Northern Nevada’s best chefs in baking pies to help feed those in need this holiday season.

Last weekend HOSA members, also known as Future Health Professionals, volunteered at the RAM medical event held at Carson High School. HOSA students served as interpreters, place holders, registration assistants, dental scribes, and vision care assistants.

The students were able to put the skills that they learn in class to use. They also gained valuable experience by working alongside dentists, doctors, nurses, and optometrists. The RAM event served more than 900 people in the Carson City area.

About 70 Naval Jr. ROTC students and others had the honor and privileges of listening to a World War II veteran speak at Carson High School on Thursday. Charles Sehe, now 92, was a teenaged sailor on the USS Nevada when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II.

The Junior Achievement "Be Entrepreneurial" course will be taught at Carson High School this Fall in all CHS Business classes. Bill Heitman and Ila Acchtabowski from Junior Achievement have been instrumental in making this happen.The course will be taught by professionals from Sierra Financial Advisors Sally Kaplan and Katie Coombs.  Junior Achievement is a non-profit youth organization founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, Theodore Vail, and Winthrop M. Crane.

Ready for the weekend, Carson City? Don’t miss out on the annual Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary. This event featuring crafts, games, and music is always fun. Learn about the Basque Culture at the Nevada State Museum. This month’s Family Fun Saturday features presentations and activities. Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans are hosting a free Legal Aid Fair in the Sierra Room of the Community Center for those of you with questions about civil, non-criminal, matters.

The leaves are beginning to turn, but the nice weather is still holding out. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year in Carson City. Enjoy the sunshine with Supervisor Karen Abowd; her monthly walkabout leaves the Community Center steps at noon. Party for a cause at Carson Lanes tonight: DJ Cowboy Bobby’s open dance night is raising money for a local woman with cancer. Mo’z Motley Blues returns to Living the Good Life and always kicks the weekend off right. Whiskey Tavern is where you can channel your inner diva; it’s karaoke night.

FRIDAY:

The weekend is still two days away, but there is plenty of fun to distract you from the wait. Learn the finer points of Improv tonight at the Brewery Arts Center. Chat with ‘The Ghost Lady,’ author Arlene Jenkins at Browsers Corner Book Store. Indulge in some live music at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. Singers should check out Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or the Feisty Goat Pub for karaoke. Dance your blues away with spicy salsa at El Charro Avita or country line dancing at Beercade.

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

The Carson City Chamber sponsored the inaugural Footgolf Tournament to benefit Carson High Culinary, raising $1,500 to send teams to competition. Shown left is Terrie McNutt, General Manager of Silver Oak and Mayor Robert Crowell along with CHS Culinary teacher Penny Reynolds and her team of students. 100 percent of monies raised in the tournament went to the culinary program.

This week is the official Nevada Week of Respect. The purpose of this week is to promote respect as an antidote to bullying and cyberbullying. Here is what is going on at CHS to celebrate the Week of Respect:

• The American Sign Language club is going to be signing songs at lunch on Thursday.
• The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.
• There will be a daily announcement with a tip on being an upstanding young adult.

The tradition of homecoming is once again here at Carson High School. For the more culturally minded, don’t miss the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus 9/11 Memorial Concert with Guest Artist Elizabeth Pitcairn at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Capital City Arts Initiative is proud to present Nicole Nathan, curator at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon. Nathan will give an illustrated talk on the role of craft and design in contemporary culture, titled ‘Craft Now’, as part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors Series.

The tradition of homecoming continues at Carson High School the week of Sept. 21-26 with events every day for students and the community to participate. The newest event added to the week of homecoming will be the addition of a family night.

Carson High School has been back for three weeks and I think we are finally getting settled into new schedules, rekindling friendships, and getting acquainted with new teachers and students. However, our school year started with much sadness as our high school community lost one of our students in a tragic accident at Lake Tahoe.

Carson High School’s 21st Century Learning Center grant is expanding this year to include support labs open to all students. These labs, which run Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 p.m., will include tutoring in English, math and science, as well as tutoring targeted to struggling freshmen and sophomores.

A Welcome Back Dance for CHS students will be Friday in Senator Square from 7 to 10 p.m. Students can buy tickets from Mrs. Angila Golikin in Room #243 for $5 before Friday, but ticket prices go up to $7 at the door that night.

Drew Briggeman, local DJ, known as "Briggets" that recently won the DJ Invitational and was featured at the Bass Camp Festival in Tahoe. Sound and music by Steven Earle, also a CHS Student. The dance is sponsored by the FBLA and is a fundraiser for their club. Only 600 tickets are being sold to the students.

Hello everyone and welcome back to a new year of Carson High School Senator news. While we took a break from this column this summer, we still had plenty of CHS students busy with school activities over the break. Thank you to the community for supporting students who participated in national competitions across the United States. The Senators were very well represented this summer.

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

Online registration for returning Carson City School District students is now available. For returning students, parents will need to log onto the Parent Portal and click on the registration link to complete online registration.

Local non-profit, CHS Football Boosters will hold its annual Kick-Off and Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park. Early check in is encouraged at 5:30 pm.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and will be an evening of great food (provided by Carson BBQ), music, silent auction and raffle as well as an induction ceremony for several former Carson High School Football greats into the Carson High Hall of Fame.

Today is National Leave the Office Early Day, so get out and enjoy the day if you can: play some golf, wander around an art exhibit, or join up with Muscle Powered on their weekly hike. Get nostalgic with Donkey Kong; the video game debuted this day in 1981. Or you could binge watch Leave it to Beaver: Jerry ‘the Beav’ Mathers was born this day in 1948.

TUESDAY:

This is the last issue of Senator Square for this school year. As always, I am amazed at how fast the year went by. My mother always told me it goes faster and faster the older you get. Mom’s have so much wisdom that you don’t want to admit they have until you become older and wiser also.

Here are the graduates of Carson High School, class of 2015. Looking outward to their message left at C Hill, the class of more than 400 walked proudly Saturday through the Carson City CHS football field. With the turn of the tassel and throw of their mortarboards, the students turned high school graduates. Congratulations, class of 2015.

For folks going into Carson High School’s 10 a.m. graduation ceremony today, car pooling is encouraged. Parking will be in the main parking area of the school, the tech center parking lot, the north parking lots and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints parking lot at 411 Saliman Road.

Parking is also available at Mills Park by going through Seely Loop at Saliman Road. Handicapped parking will be available toward the front entrances of the high school.
