I do have a special early Christmas present for you all later in this report. But first I would like to say thank you, to all the anglers that have called the Naw line or have shared their fishing adventures over this last year. I hope I have answered all your questions, and as well you have educated me.
We all like to brag about our fishing adventures.
Carson City Symphony's Strings in Schools presents Dec. 3 performance of 'This is Not a Christmas Concert'
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 11/26/2013 - 8:42pmStrings in the Schools, Carson City Symphony's after-school program, presents its fourth annual "This is Not a Christmas Concert" on Tuesday, December 3, 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St., Carson City.
More than 100 string players, including Carson City public-, private-, and home-schooled students, and students from surrounding areas, will perform several pieces, from classics to folk and fiddle tunes, including Karl Jenkins' Palladio: Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra, Let's Boogey, and Flop Eared Mule. Admission is free.
Toys for Tots is ready to help community with hotline beginning Dec. 2
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 11/26/2013 - 9:21amThe Toys for Tots HOTLINE will be open for families requesting toys for Christmas. The hotline opens December 2nd through December 23rd from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.
Toys for Tots will be serving children in Carson, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties. The HOTLINE NUMBER IS 884-TOYS.
Toys for Tots will be kicking off the 2013 campaign with our local Marines at all three Walmart stores on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30.

Carson City Salvation Army kicks off Red Kettle campaign
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 11/25/2013 - 7:06pmContinuing its 122-year national tradition, Salvation Army of Carson City launched its Red Kettle fundraising campaign Monday with bells ringing at 15 local retailers, said Carson City Corps Lt. Mark Cyr. Another 10 sites will be added by the end of this week to make a total of 25 Red Kettle bell ringers.
Christmas in the Sierra Concert

There will be performances at 5 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. There will also be a No Host Bar inside the Town Hall. Each ticket holder can receive 10% off of dinner purchased at Genoa restaurants including Genoa Station Bar and Grille, the Genoa Country Store and Tombstone Tap & Grill up until 5 pm. 'Holiday with a Hero' needs contributions to aid Carson City area homeless children

The Road to Bethlehem - A Living Nativity

Each year since 2001, the First United Methodist Church of Carson City has re-enacted the night of Christ’s birth as a drive-through, Living Nativity.
Lit by 800 luminaria and occupying an entire city block, ten scenes are depicted as cars drive down The Road to Bethlehem. Walkers also enjoy the story from a special walking path.

The Carson City Symphony presents the 30th annual Holiday Treat concert on Sunday, December 15, 4:00 p.m., at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.
The Symphony will be joined on the program by the Carson City Symphony Chorus, and Norma Conway's Victorian Dancers. Pre-concert entertainment begins at 3:00 p.m. in the lobby.
Carson City Salvation Army job fair on Friday to recruit kettle workers, drivers

It takes a lot of people to see through the annual campaign. The Salvation Army in Carson City will hold a job fair Friday and is looking for kettle workers, an office assistant and drivers to help with the holiday season. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to noon at the Salvation Army, 661 Colorado Street.
Be a Santa to a Veteran fundraiser Nov. 30 at Jimmy G's

The Carson City-based Web of Support group will host the "Be a Santa to A Veteran" fundraiser from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 at Jimmy G's.
2,500 Christmas tree cutting permits in the Lake Tahoe Basin go on sale Nov. 18

Permits cost $10 each (cash or check only, no credit cards) with a limit of two permits per family. Permit holders may choose from a variety of pine, fir or cedar in designated cutting areas.
Polar Express holiday train aboard V&T Railroad sells-out third straight year

For the third year, The Polar Express train aboard the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad has sold out. More than 16,000 passengers secured tickets on the Christmas season-flavored, children's story-inspired holiday passenger train.
Even with the addition of 18 more trains representing 6,500 seats over last year’s 10,000-plus capacity, a 66 percent increase, the train’s popularity continues to grow, V&T officials note.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for 20 homebound seniors in the community (our list of seniors and their modest wish lists are supplied to us by the Meals on Wheels program).
Each year our members shop, wrap, deliver and visit each home bound senior on our list. It's always a heart-warming experience to help make these seniors' holidays more merrier.
Forest Service Christmas tree permits on sale beginning Nov. 22
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 11/05/2013 - 11:43amChristmas tree cutting permits available through the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Carson Ranger District will be ready for sale beginning Nov. 22 and lasting through Dec. 24 or until the 4,000 permits are sold.
Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 each in designated cutting areas for white fir, incense cedar, Jeffrey, and lodgepole pine trees, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

Based on Lev Ivanov‘s original ballet “The Nutcracker,” Peanutcracker is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet.
Carson City Symphony Chorus to begin rehearsals

The Chorus, directed by Michael Langham, is open to all singers, high-school age through adults. They will perform in the Holiday Treat concert with the Symphony on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Carson City Community Center.
Bear nearly 'crashes' Nevada Day Parade
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sat, 10/26/2013 - 3:26pmNevada celebrates its birthday every year with the Nevada Day Parade down the main drag of the state capital, Carson City. This year, a Sierra Nevada 400 pound male black bear nearly “crashed” the parade, the Nevada Department of Wildlife reports.
Early Saturday morning, reports began coming in to the Carson City Sheriff’s office that there was a bear in east Carson, near Lone Mountain Cemetery, about a half mile from the parade route, said NDOW spokesman Chris Healy.
Bear caught Tuesday in Carson City to be released by Nevada wildlife officials
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 10/22/2013 - 4:09pmBear activity around Carson City continues to keep Nevada wildlife managers busy. A 350-pound male black bear was caught early Tuesday morning in west Carson City.
The bear had never been handled before and was expected to be released sometime Wednesday morning, said Nevada Department of Wildlife black bear biologist Carl Lackey.

Busy bear weekend in Carson City, western Nevada

While west Reno is still experiencing bear sightings, the west side of Carson City, Yerington and the outskirts of Gardnerville have all joined the “fun” with bear activity of their own.

The ladies were six of the passengers on a special, once-a-year, chartered bus that traveled to Apple Hill from the Carson Senior Center.
If you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill. And, if you are a newcomer, you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”

The funds that are collected will help the students be able to travel to competitions and provide scholarships to students in the program.

There will be a trivia contest on board with prizes for those with their thinking caps on. Passengers will be let off the train in order to gaze through telescopes at the night sky, guided by the Dark Rangers of Great Basin National Park. This is a great train ride that the whole family can enjoy.

Nevada recycling rate reaches historic high, Carson City inches closer to goal

In 2012, the recycling rate was 28.8 percent, surpassing the state's goal of 25 percent, according to the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection. In 2012, Carson City had a recycling rate of 24.9 percent.
In 1991 legislation known as AB320 set a goal that at least 25 percent of municipal solid waste would be recycled in counties that have a population of greater than 45,000.
