Let’s try this again. Last week, the rain was a little too much for the Westside Cruise, so the organizers postponed it until today. The annual Westside Cruise ia a part of Bike Month, and one of the zanier events. Dress you and your bike up and head off to explore the historic district. Happy one year Anniversary to Battle Born Social. The restaurant and lounge will be celebrating with cocktails, appetizers and more; there is a $20 cover for the event, but that money will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada and Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.

More than 15 Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) with the First Juvenile District Court in Carson City were sworn in Wednesday during a public ceremony held at the Carson City Courthouse.

The number of available foster homes in Carson City is so low right now that siblings cannot reside together in emergency foster care, a local panel of child welfare advocates said.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month nationwide and throughout Nevada. In Carson City, volunteers recently planted hundreds of blue and silver pinwheels on the front lawn of the Nevada Legislature to bring awareness to child abuse across the Silver State.

A little rain can’t ruin today’s parade. The UNR Wolf Pack Men’s Basketball team has made it into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Watch the game at your favorite watering hole; you’ll likely find celebratory drink specials. The next phase of Downtown constructions is ramping up. Find out what’s in store for Curry Street at today’s Streetscaping Pre-Construction Public Meeting. Nevada’s Big Give is in full swing. Choose your favorite non-profit and donate what you can; a little can go a long way.

I just don’t have it in me to make an Ides of March pun, but I guess I could take a stab at it. There isn’t really anything to be wary of today, so head out with abandon. Band students from all the Carson City schools, elementary on up, will get together this evening for a grand performance. Band-o-Rama will take place in the ‘big’ gymnasium at Carson High; get there early if you want a good seat. As I write this, the snow has not yet begun to fall. I cannot predict whether we’ll see one inch or seven inches on the valley floor over the next few days, but wet roads make for a more dangerous journey. Please stay safe out there. Due to the cold and ugly weather the past couple of days, Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, is again offering an information hour. Currently, there are over 100 children in the Carson City child welfare system. Less than 20 of those children are headed towards reunification with their parents.

I really can’t keep up with the changing weather reports around here. I think we are expecting snow, so you’ll want to be ready for anything. Our County Clerk’s office is holding an open house to show off the new voting machines we’ll be using for this year’s elections.

There are not enough foster families in Carson City to meet the need, forcing children to be displaced into other communities — possibly causing further trauma. Information meetings this Wednesday and in March will address the shortage and ways to recruit families wanting to help.

The Division of Child and Family Services is holding a foster parent information night Wednesday Feb. 7, at Carson Middle School from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Evidence of a marijuana growing operation was found Friday night in the bedroom of a minor inside a Longview Drive residence, a report from the Carson City Sheriff's Office said.

November is National Adoption Month. In Nevada, there are more than 4,600 children and teens in foster care. Many of these children have spent several years in foster care and are seeking more permanent connections through adoption by a family or adult mentor.

CASA OF Carson City will begin new training for CASA volunteers Thursday, April 13, 6 to 9 p.m. at the CASA office in the Family Court Complex, 1539 E. Fifth St in Carson City. To access the office, drive to the back of the parking lot where a large CASA sign will be on the door.

The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges announced Friday that it has received 33 new and supplemental awards providing more than $10.5 million in additional funding. The NCJFCJ is devoted to ensuring justice and improving outcomes for families and children in courts nationwide.
