The San Francisco Giants have come to Carson City. A new youth community baseball program with the backing of a Major League Baseball club opened for sign-ups earlier this month in the Nevada state capital.

The Junior Giants community league, run by the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, is sponsored by the San Francisco Giants Community Fund, a charitable outreach of the professional sports franchise.

There are two basic ways to claim vehicle operating expenses. Actual costs multiplied by the percentage that is business use is one way. Suppose you drove the vehicle 10,000 miles for the year and 2,000 miles were documented for business use. 20 percent of the actual costs (gas, repairs, tires, insurance, license and depreciation) can be your deduction.

A fundraiser benefitting Honor Flight Nevada will be held Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at Charlie's Grilled Subs in the Carson Mall.

All menu items are included in the fundraiser, which will last until the items are gone.

Honor Flight Nevada is an annual charitable event that seeks to send military veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built commemorating their service and sacrifice.

Pets of the Homeless, the only national nonprofit organization that is focused on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of homeless people, has received over $52,000 from a number of foundations in 2015.

Playing with mud isn’t just for little kids. At Carson City Pottery, the fun of getting your hands dirty is for adults, too.

Robin McGregor, owner of Carson City Pottery with her husband, Rich, whimsically describes working with clay as feeling like a kid again.

“I love to feel the clay in my hands,” she said. “It gives me pleasure to throw.”

Just to be clear, “throwing” is the term used by pottery artists when shaping clay. It’s something Robin McGregor has been doing for 24 years since she first put clay in her hands.

IRS Code Sec. 170(f)(8)(A) says no charitable contribution deduction for any contribution of $250 or more is allowed unless the taxpayer substantiates the contribution with a contemporaneous written acknowledgment (CWA) of the contribution by the donee organization (the charity).

The Young Americans are coming to Carson City in March. The Young Americans are an International group of young adults that travel the world teaching music, dance, self esteem, voice and lifelong friendship. They will be in Carson City March 10-12, at the 2016 Carson Community Center.

Nevada Humane Society wants you to ring in the New Year by making a resolution to neuter your male dog or cat during their Happy Neuter Year campaign. At this time, the only appointments left are for small, male dogs and male cats.

Suppose you own shares of a publicly traded stock or an investment in a mutual fund. If your original cost was $10,000 and the current value after holding it many years is $50,000, if you sell it there will be a $40,000 gain.

That faithfulness will stand to benefit around 3,000 children this year in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties.

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettles — a holiday tradition that has served as a symbol of goodwill for more than 100 years will be accepting store gift cards this year.

“We all have a gift card in a drawer somewhere or at the bottom of our purse that maybe has $1.33 left on it; What can you do with $1.33?” says Lt. Mark Cyr, Carson City officer in-charge. “If 10 people put one of those cards into one of our Red Kettles we can provide a family with a Christmas meal. That little bit of change can help 'change' one of your neighbors holiday.”

The Individual Income Tax Return, form 1040 allows for a deduction on Schedule A for charitable contributions. Schedule A lists the itemized deductions such as home mortgage interest, real estate taxes, government services tax on vehicle licenses, large medical expenses, employee business expenses, etc.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation Inc granted $5,000 to the Community Counseling Center in Carson City to help improve the quality of life in our community.

The Center wrote a request for support in its work in the jail as a member of the Forensic Assessment Treatment Team which aids in providing substance abuse evaluations and treatment for people in custody. The Center also provides seven recovery groups in the Carson City jail.

With contributions running in short supply, the Salvation Army in Carson City hopes to generate donor momentum going into the holidays with a community Kettle Kick off event this Friday, featuring an open house, and in the evening, a RSVP fundraising dinner.

Locke and Betty Ray Lesch are longtime, generous supporters of their community and Carson Tahoe Health. Upon learning that the front entrance of the Carson City hospital was in critical need of renovation including a costly new door system to improve patient access and resist harsh weather elements, they donated $100,000 toward the project.

The Mallory Foundation’s tradition of innovation and commitment to community is once again on prominent display with the unveiling of the newly renovated “Mallory Emergency Department” at Carson Tahoe Health. Recently opening its doors, the expanded emergency department entrance was made possible by their $500,000 gift.

About 99.7 percent of folks who die do not need to file a U.S. Estate Tax Return, form 706. The exclusion (before adjusting for taxable gifts) is currently $5,430,000. That can be left without a federal death tax. Some states, about 19 of them, do have estate or inheritance taxes, but California, Florida and New York join Nevada in not having a state death tax.

Late last year, Congress finally passed various tax law extensions. That did not give much time for individuals and business owners to react. By waiting until the last few days of the year, it did show Congress does not understand the importance of having tax laws that are consistent and easily understood.

During the month of April, Nevada Humane Society will offer no-cost spay and neuter surgeries, plus free rabies vaccinations in Carson City and Washoe County as part of Community Cat, PetSmart Charities’ spay/neuter campaign to alter free-roaming cats.

If left unaltered, unowned feral and stray cats produce large quantities of unwanted kittens each spring, flooding local animal shelters and leading to higher euthanasia rates.

Entering into his 10th hour of nonstop speaking, Ian Hill said he was feeling fine. “It’s amazing that after nine-and-a-half hours, I still have all this energy,” he said.
