Rain turns to snow in Carson City as storm pushes through; Tahoe may get several feet overnight (UPDATE: 9:40 PM)
Submitted by editor on Sun, 12/19/2010 - 4:20amRain has turned to snow tonight as a strong winter storm continues to bring a mix of precipitation to the Carson City area and heavy snow at Lake Tahoe.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday morning for the Carson City region, while a winter storm warning continues at Lake Tahoe until 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Carson City and Carson Valley regions can expect about 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight, while Tahoe is expected to receive several more feet, especially in areas above 7,000 feet.
Earlier Sunday wind and rain caused a number of problems, including downed trees and minor flooding.
At 4:25 p.m., a large tree crashed into two vehicles on Nelson Lane near Bunch Way in Carson City. Tree limbs are reportedly also resting on homes, according to police dispatch. Meanwhile high winds that whipped through the area earlier this afternoon brought down another large tree in the area of Sherman Lane.
Water ponding has been reported throughout town, both the east and west sides, and around Highway 50 near the old Scolari's. Roof leaks have even been reported at the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 911 Musser Street.
Back-to-back weather systems moving into the Carson City area today has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a winter weather advisory through 3 a.m. Monday morning.
UPDATE 4 p.m.: Mount Rose Highway continues to remain closed because of weather conditions. And there is a wind advisory for the Carson City region. Go to Carsonweather.com for the latest.
High winds for Carson City area this afternoon as new weather system arrives

A high wind warning remains in effect today through the Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County regions until 4 this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and Carsonweather.com.
Winds will continue to increase through this morning with the strongest from mid-morning through early this afternoon. The highest wind gust reported so far of the system was 48 mph at 10:53 a.m., according to carsonweather.com.
Region braces for strong storm system; potential for flooding exists in Carson City

Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau nets $14K in state tourism grants

First prize is a $100 gift certificate to Ti Amo at the Fandango, so there’s some incentive, and it looks like the contest is still open for nominations if you have a favorite house, or even your house, that you’d like to submit. Voting has already started though, so houses going in now are at a bit of a disadvantage.
Gaming numbers surge 11 percent statewide in October

The surge was led by the Las Vegas Strip, the state's biggest gaming center, which took in $2,021,082,843 in October, a 16.07 percent increase over October 2009.
Gaming revenues for the fiscal year that started in July are up 5.35 percent over prior year.

Storm on track for snow in Carson City by this weekend

The latest weather statement this morning from the weather service in Reno calls for heavy snow in the Sierra this weekend with temperatures cold enough for snow to fall along the valley floors through Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno.
A different idea for reusing Nugget Project report
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Fri, 11/12/2010 - 11:15amI was going through old notes this morning, and found some scribbling I'd done about the old vacant Kmart on North Carson Street, sitting next to a printout of the Meridian Report on the feasibility of the state office portion of the Nugget Project.
It was like one of those old commercials for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, where the chocolate and the peanut butter collide to make something pretty cool.
Carson area posts biggest monthly gaming increase in state
Submitted by admin on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 11:37amThe area that includes Carson City and Carson Valley posted a 10.8 percent increase in gaming revenue in September over prior year, the best of any region of the state for that month.
The Carson area was the only real bright spot in northern Nevada, with South Lake Tahoe revenues declining 8.28 percent, while Washoe County was down 5.31 percent, and Elko down 4.31 percent.
Statewide gaming revenues increased .73 percent in September over prior year. Three months into the fiscal year, statewide revenues are up 2.33 percent.

Storm may blow into Carson City region by late Sunday
Submitted by editor on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 4:17amThe warm temperatures and nice fall weather we've enjoyed over the past week may come to an end later this weekend. A storm is brewing in the Pacific and may reach Western Nevada and the Sierra by late Sunday.
The cold front is expected to develop in the region by Sunday afternoon, with rain and gusty winds expected in Carson City and the Carson Valley with snow levels dropping to around 7,000 feet in the Lake Tahoe Basin, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and carsonweather.com.
The Carson Valley Buffalo

There’s a herd of buffalo living in the Carson Valley, right by the highway. Most of the time they’re kept in a little pen back where you can’t see them. Today they were out in the big field, though, making a rare appearance. For more photos, go to aroundcarson.com.
Haunted Weekend

It started with the Carson City Ghost Walk, which has been a tradition for over a decade, and then the Carson Valley got into the act. There’s now enough going on to keep you busy through the whole weekend. Tours will explore Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa, as well as the Mottsville Cemetery. Gaming win jumps 11.51 percent in August
Submitted by admin on Fri, 10/08/2010 - 7:23amNevada's statewide gaming win shot up 11.51 percent in August compared to the prior year, according to the Gaming Control Board report out today.
The Las Vegas Strip — the state's most profitable gaming area — did great business in August, with a 21 percent increase over prior year. That offset loses in other areas of the state, such as Washoe and Elko counties.
The Carson Valley area that includes Carson City saw an increase of 7.73 percent. South Lake Tahoe's win increased by 7.2 percent.

Tractors Spotted in the Wild

A herd of wild tractors has taken up residence in northern Carson Valley. These shy beasts are sometimes seen around town in small numbers, but a gathering of this size is rare these days. They are known for their ability to chew up sagebrush and leave behind patches of bare dirt, an ability that can be beneficial to humans sometimes but can also lead to huge dust storms. A similar herd gathered at Topsy Lane at the Riverwood development a couple of years ago, and the scars from that are still visible.
Tahoe Creamery Ice Cream Out of Business

This was kind of a surprise to hear. Tahoe Creamery, which made ice cream in a factory out by the Minden-Tahoe airport in Carson Valley, has gone out of business.

Nevada gaming numbers down, again
Submitted by admin on Fri, 09/10/2010 - 8:59amNevada's gaming win was down 4.93 percent statewide in July, compared with the same period last year, according to numbers released today by the Gaming Control Board.
The Carson Valley area that includes Carson City was down 4.12 percent. The only two areas in the state that posted gains were North Lake Tahoe and Mesquite. The biggest losers were North Las Vegas (-23.56 percent) and Downtown Las Vegas (-19.26 percent). The Las Vegas Strip took in almost exactly the same amount as in July 2009.
V&T Railroad extends Carson City to Virginia City operations through Dec. 18

The “Sisters in History Route” between Carson City and Virginia City was set to operate through Oct. 31, Nevada Day but due to popular demand as evidenced by many sold-out weekends, the season has been expanded for an additional six weeks, officials announced today.

Douglas County authorities ask for help in solving two arson attempts at valley schools

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information regarding the acts of arson that were discovered at both Minden and Gardnerville elementary schools on the mornings of Wednesday, Aug. 18 and Thursday, Aug. 19, according to a press statement. In each of the cases, school custodians discovered evidence the fires were intentionally set.

Carson City, Carson Valley area and Lake Tahoe south shore see June gaming revenue increase
Submitted by editor on Thu, 08/12/2010 - 9:45amThe Carson Valley region, which includes Carson City, and the Stateline casino corridor at South Shore Lake Tahoe were the only two regions in Nevada that saw an increase rather than a decrease in gaming revenue for the month of June, the state's gaming control board reported today.
The casinos in the Carson City and Carson Valley area climbed by 5.1 percent over the fiscal year for June, followed by the Tahoe casinos, which jumped to 13.5 percent.
