Grant to Nevada Health Centers supports telehealth services for children at school sites

CARSON CITY — Improving student health and reducing student absenteeism are just two of the goals of Nevada Health Centers as they bring telehealth services to schools.

Senator Square: Carson High School graduate addresses National Honor Society members

National Honor Society held its induction ceremony Sept. 23 in the CHS Big Gym featuring guest speaker Ryan Costella a 2000 CHS graduate. Costella was an active member of NHS, and this fact influenced his desire to attend college at Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA where he earned degrees in Political Science and English.

Carson City, Douglas County locals enlist in the United States Army

The Carson City Army Recruiting Station is proud to welcome two of our newest Future Soldiers, Alissa Lucas and Taylor Clark. Alissa Lucas is currently a Senior at Carson High School and a member of the Junior ROTC.

She chose to attend training to be Military Police and will leave after high school graduation. Taylor Clark is from Gardnerville and a 2019 graduate of Douglas High School. She chose to become an Intelligence Analyst and leaves for Basic Training in November. Congratulations to you both for making the decision to serve our country!

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, which provides oral healthcare to children in northern Nevada, will make stops at schools in Carson Valley and Carson City, Oct. 1-3. Run through the Nevada Health Centers, staff aboard the Ronald McDonald mobile center focuses on treatment, education, prevention and advocacy to children.

Senator Square: 'Happiest Carson High School Homecoming on Earth' a huge success

Homecoming, first seen in 1911 at the University of Missouri, is a wonderful event celebrated throughout the US at high schools and colleges. Homecoming is more than just a football game, it encompasses multiple celebratory events such as bonfires, tailgate parties, dances, and the crowning of a King and Queen. Fall is in the air in Carson City, and a change in the weather was one more reason for kids and adults alike to get out and celebrate this year’s Disney themed Happiest Homecoming on Earth.

The Carson Senators varsity football team plays the Hug Hawks on Friday at Carson High School at 7 p.m.

Carson is 1-2 to start the year coming off a tough losses to Foothill and Redding. Hug is 0-4 coming off a 39-0 loss to Galena.

Carson City Kiwanis is Serving Breakfast to Raise Money for Scholarships

Carson City Kiwanis is serving short stacks for a tall cause at the Carson City Applebee’s on Oct. 5, 2019 from 8 to 10 a.m. The entire proceeds of this event will support the Ralph Denny Memorial Scholarship that awards a one-time $750 scholarship to a local high school graduate each school year. Originally named the Carson City Kiwanis Annual Scholarship, it was renamed following the passing of long-time Kiwanis member, Ralph Denny.

Carson City School District’s strategic plan meeting to focus on Snyder property

The Carson City School District’s quarterly Community PLC (Professional Learning Community) meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m., will offer a report from the Citizen Committee for 1600 Snyder. Seven of 10 schools in Carson City district show improvements in Nevada performance report

CARSON CITY — Seventy percent of the schools in Carson City showed improvements in the latest Star Ratings report, according to the Nevada Department of Education State. With Sunday’s release of the Nevada School Performance Framework, 7 of the 10 schools within the Carson City School District improved enough to earn a higher star ranking.

Nevada State Museum joins in Smithsonian’s ‘Museum Day’ this Saturday in Carson City

Senator Square: Time for the Happiest Carson High School Homecoming on Earth

Friday Sept. 13, no bad luck on this day, beginning at 1:18 p.m. was an assembly in the Big Gym during the last class of the day as an introduction to CHS’ Happiest Homecoming on Earth. Leadership students led the assembly with the first activity being the introduction of the Homecoming King and Queen candidates who made their grand entrance onto the floor.

Saliman and Robinson: Is this Carson City's worst intersection?

The intersection at Robinson and Saliman is, for the majority of the day, reasonable and quick to get through. However, in the thirty minutes before Carson High School classes begin, and the thirty minutes after school lets out, it is one of the most frustrating intersections in the capital city.

There are nine lanes of traffic that have to navigate the four-way stop signs at this intersection, plus the hundreds of students using all four crosswalks.

On Thursday afternoon, ten minutes prior to school letting out at 2 p.m. and ending at 2:20 p.m., I observed the following:

Carson City native, CHS grad Teri Case novels win gold at International Readers' Favorite Awards

Carson City native-born author Teri Case has recently won two Gold Awards at the International Readers' Favorite Awards for her books "Tiger Drive" and "In the Doghouse."

Teri's first book, "Tiger Drive," named for the Carson City street she had lived growing up, is about a fictionalized family coping with many different personalities. It received the Reader' Favorite Gold Award in the "fiction, drama" category.

Senator Square: Carson High School seniors rise with the sun

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.
