The U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday its hazardous fuels reduction burning plans for the Carson and Bridgeport Rangers Districts. Among those planned pile burns include 102 acres in Little Valley near the area of last year's catastrophic wildfire in Washoe Valley.

For most everyone, October 31st is Halloween, pure and simple. In Carson City, it’s a little more complicated.

One might think that the end of summer means that the fun times are over: they would be wrong. This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The annual Genoa Candy Dance is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and this weekend welcomes the first ever Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park, as well. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

SATURDAY:

Carson City wasn't left out of the sky candy mix on this last day of the Great Reno Balloon Race. A hot air balloon passed over calm, sunny Carson City skies Sunday morning.

Carson City Library, Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, and Southwest Gas are teaming up to host a BOO-NANZA with trick or treating, STEAM activities, a costume contest, spooky decorations, and a movie!

This event will be held on Wednesday, October 25 from 4-6 PM at the Community Center, Library, and Aquatic Facility. BOO-NANZA is a free, safe, and spooky environment for children to participate in Halloween fun. The first 100 participants will receive a bag to use for trick or treating.

Next time you feel yourself starting to get upset, you might grab a pinwheel. That’s what the 5-year-olds in Lisa Yesitis’s class do. And if it works for them, it can work for anybody.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Bowers Mansion plays host to the annual Bluegrass Festival – bring a picnic and enjoy. Downtown Carson City will see the first of three monthly Beer Crawls; if you get there early, head over to Remedy’s to witness their yearly Bloody Mary Competition. There is something for everyone this weekend, so keep reading and find your fun.

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is seeking support from businesses, organizations and individuals in the community to bring an all-new community Halloween celebration this year to the Nevada state capital, Recreation Superintendent Dan Earp said.

Summer nights are made to be enjoyed. Grab the kids, a blanket and picnic, and head to the park nearest you. Mills Park in Carson City features its first ever ‘Movie in the Park’ tonight with a showing of ‘Sing’. Gardnerville’s last of the season movie is Disney’s ‘Moana.’ Dancing shoes are recommended, but not required, for this week’s outdoor concert in McFadden Plaza: Musicole begins at 7:30 p.m. Get there early to see the amazing talent in 'We Rock Kidz' on the stage in Comma Coffee's Courtyard. Wind down the weekend with a bike ride with Muscle Powered, or maybe enjoy a trail on your own. You’ll find morning yoga at Comma Coffee, with another Community Yogi offering at the Carson City Library at noon. If you haven’t had your fill of cotton candy, carnival rides, ponies, and tractor pulls you’ve still got today to enjoy the Carson City Fair at Fuji Park. Kick off those Sunday shoes with a trip to the movie theater. You’ve got two chances to catch the 80’s classic ‘Footloose’ on the big screen today and Wednesday.

SUNDAY:

A sunny summer weekend has arrived and it brings numerous fun ways to seize the day. You can always head out hiking or spend the day at the pool, but the Carson City Fair is just here until Sunday. Farm animals, great exhibits, live entertainment, a carnival, and a bull-riding rodeo can be found at Fuji Park. Park your car at the Super Walmart on Topsy and you’ll be treated to a free shuttle. Go a little bit country at the Brewery Arts Center tonight; they are bringing back the Southern Drawl Band to the Minnesota Street Stage for this week’s free concert.

SATURDAY:

It may just be the third of July, but our country’s birthday celebrations have already started. You’ll find the annual RSVP Carnival at Mills Park with games, rides, cotton candy, and hours of skateboarding feats of daring-do. It’s an old-fashioned Fourth of July Party at the Senior Center in Dayton, complete with a show-n-shine and yummy bar-be-que. Head up to Kings Beach in Lake Tahoe for the early-bird fireworks show and beach bash.

Make every move count. The Blue Star Moms Zumba fundraising event features Zin instructors from around Norther Nevada. Join them at Dayton High School, Saturday, July 15 from 10am until 12pm. You’ll find Dayton High School at 335 Dayton Valley Road in Dayton.

A 39-year-old woman was arrested on multiple charges including drug trafficking, conspiracy, furnishing drugs to a prisoner and burglary, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Smack dab in the middle of April and the town is officially in its Spring thaw. Easter is on Sunday, so just about anywhere you go you’ll find the Bunny and an egg hunt. To make it easy, I’ve moved all of those events to their own everything Easter list HERE.

So much is happening this weekend, that breaking my weekend list up seemed like the only thing to do. Eggs galore, brunches, and family friendly fun is what you’ll find here. Whether you’re in Carson, Douglas, Dayton, or Virginia City – there’s something fun just around the corner. I’ve listed them by start time, and have the town listed first to make an event near you easy to locate.

SATURDAY, April 15:

Those Easter Baskets won’t stuff themselves. Find something for your hunny-bunny at the Craft Fair and Merchant Expo in the Nugget Banquet Room. Family Day at A to Zen offers lazy Sunday quality time with the kids. Wash the recent storms off your car and help send the Carson High Robotics Team to their next competition when you stop by their car wash at the downtown ARCO. Relaxation is on tap at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar as Roska Entertainment brings you their first ‘Rehab Sunday.’

SUNDAY: Palm Sunday

It’s not the sunny spring weekend many of us were hoping for, but it’s here nonetheless. Start the day at Applebee’s for a Flapjack Fundraiser to benefit the Eagle Valley Middle School Robotics Team. TOCCATA kicks off its 12th season of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion; enjoy free admittance to today’s dress rehearsal at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church. No matter what your interests, this valley offers something for everyone. Keep reading for this weekend’s options.

Silver Springs, NV. – Lahontan State Recreation Area is proud to host its 22nd annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 15. This popular family event includes candy, prizes and photos with the Easter Bunny. Due to generous donations from local businesses and residents, the park plans to hide several thousand eggs this year.

I’m hoping that April brings more than just showers. Not that I don’t love the spring flowers, but I’m really ready for some sunshine. Start off the month with a clean kitchen: let the Elks Club take care of breakfast. Grab your guitar, tambourine, ukulele, or vocal chords and join the A to Zen Music Jam. Head ‘North by Northwest’ at the Galaxy Theater. The classic thriller is on the big screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

SUNDAY:

It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home. The Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers want to ‘Give Our Regards to Broadway’ during their one weekend only production. There’s too much to mention in this short opening paragraph, so keep reading for all the great things our valley and sister valleys have to offer.

SATURDAY:

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. We’ve survived the freakish lamb-lion hybrid of March and we’ve survived the week, so let’s celebrate. Laugh it up with Kathleen Dunbar or Geechy Guy; Carson Comedy takes over the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall as well as their regular venue inside the Nugget. Live music, karaoke, and DJ dance parties can be found at all your favorite water holes and hot spots. Meet artist, Mike Bond, at Carson City Art Gallery at their monthly reception.

The weekend always rushes by too quickly. Slow it down with Community Yoga at Comma Coffee or join Muscle Powered on their weekly bike ride. Bingo is more than just a name-o at the Carson City Senior Center. Join in the fun and help raise funds for the Meals on Wheels Program. Theater lovers won’t want to miss ‘A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum’ at the CVIC Hall in Minden or ‘Bus Stop’ performed by the Proscenium Players at the Brewery Arts Center.

Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. Wild Horse Children’s Theater finishes up its spring production of ‘Annie, Jr: The Musical,’ so don’t miss your chance to catch these talented kids on stage. Muscle Powered will be out and about for their monthly Trash Mob and invite you to help clean up a little corner of our valley. The Annual Polar Plunge at Zephyr Cove is a brave way to help the Special Olympics raise money, and the costumes get wilder every year. Keep reading and enjoy the weather before the clouds return.

What’s this? A weekend with no snow in sight? That’s the best news I’ve heard in months. Welcome to the wrestlers and swimmers who are in town for their respective tournaments: you’ll find other fun things on this list to occupy your downtime. It’s a St. Patty’s celebration in Virginia City this weekend with the parade, Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest, and Ball Buster Saloon Crawl. Bragging rights are on the line at the Sixth Annual Thirsty Boy Homebrew Competition sponsored by Just Brew It. You’ll get a sneak peek at the soon-to-open Shoe Tree Brewery if you attend the award ceremony.

Our favorite red-headed orphan sings that ‘the sun’ll come out tomorrow.’ Luckily we don’t have to wait: for the sunshine or for the Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s production of Annie, Jr. You’ll find the musical at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall this weekend and next. Kids are welcome to make a free craft or decorate a St. Patrick’s Day Cookie at Genoa Candy and Coffee. Go on an ‘American Road Trip’ at the Plaza Hotel as part of their Mike Thompson Lecture Series. What a great start to March. A few days on sunshine under our belt and now it’s wine walk weekend. With fingers crossed, the weather should hold out until it’s over, but be prepared for some wind. The Shrine Circus is in Reno, Girl Scout Cookies are on sale, and we inch closer to the longer days and shorter nights of Spring.
