White Cane Days, grand opening, pool tournament and more highlight weekend activities around Carson City

Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! Did you know that skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers? It’s estimated that over one million Americans develop some type of skin cancer every year. Overexposure to sunlight (including tanning) is the main cause, especially when it results in sunburn and blistering. Avoiding the sun is your best defense, but when you can’t, have your skin checked by a professional on a regular basis.

If you’ve got more apples than you know what to do with, the Greenhouse Garden Center has a cider press available today. Play BINGO for a good cause at the Carson City Senior Center, and don’t forget your costume. Carson City Symphony Association begins their 34th Season today with a concert at the Bob Boldrick Theater; as always, those under 18 get free admission.

I already knew that broccoli and its relatives (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, arugula, collards, radish, turnips and others) were high in antioxidants. They provide important essential nutrients and help to reduce the risk of various cancers.
Flow for the Cure

Join us for any of our wonderful flow classes and your gift will support Komen Nevada in providing local community grants to help people in our community access education, screening and treatment. Your funds also support life-saving research initiatives that will enable scientists to discover the cures for breast cancer.
Suggested donation of $5-10 per class is encouraged.
Mobile Mammovan to make stops in Carson City, Virginia City and Yerington
Submitted by editor on Sat, 01/23/2016 - 12:36pmNevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will be making stops beginning next week around northern Nevada. There will screenings in Carson City, Virginia City, Yerington and Reno.
The mobile Mammovan aims to make mammography services accessible and convenient for women by visiting locations across Nevada. These screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however, screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 that have a physician referral.
