NEWLY REMODELED SMITH’S BRINGS FRESH SHOPPING EXPERIENCE
Smith's Food & Drug will celebrate the remodeling of its store at 599 E. William Street in Carson City on Wednesday, February 29 with the first 300 customers through the door receiving coupons for free breakfast items and a chance of winning one of 3 ipads. Smith’s will also make a $1,000 donation to Carson City High School.
The 69,255 square foot store has notable changes to its look and feel with a contemporary décor package of blue terra cotta, gold and brown which all work together to create a fresh and bright shopping environment.
New shopping features of the $1.5 million remodel include: full-service meat and seafood cases, expanded dairy section, cheese island, olive bar and deli cases; enhanced produce section displayed on euro wooden tables with track lighting; and enlarged service deli seating area where shoppers may sit and enjoy an espresso coffee or flavored specialty beverage.
The store has added new check stands, a spectacular selection of fresh cut flowers and plants, which greet customers at the door, and enlarged product offerings in the personal cosmetic and beauty aisle. The gaming area has been relocated to an enclosed room just outside the lobby area.
Continuing Smith’s commitment to sustainability, new frozen and refrigerated grocery cases all house energy-efficient motion-sensitive LED lights that reduce energy usage by two-thirds. In addition, customers may deposit their used plastic grocery bags in the container at the front of the store to be recycled.
“This has been an exciting process for our 100 store associates, and we are delighted to share our exciting 'new' Smith's with our customers,” said Michael Cooke, Smith’s Carson City store manager.
Customers in Carson City participate in Smith’s rewards card program, which gives customers one point for every dollar spent inside the store on groceries and most nonfood items. The card is also good for accumulating one point per dollar for store purchases made at area QuikStop convenience stores. Accumulated rewards points may then be redeemed in two different ways. First, customers can “save today” by using points for up to $1 per gallon fuel savings at Smith’s, QuikStop and participating Shell stations. Or customers may “save later” when rewards points not redeemed on fuel at the end of each quarter will be converted into cash-back checks mailed to rewards card customers’ homes.
In 2011, with support from associates, customers and suppliers, Smith’s Food & Drug donated a total of $9.5 million worth of product and cash to local nonprofit organizations. Of that amount, the company donated $2 million in Nevada including: $20,715 in undesignated cash contributions to K-12 schools; $65,000 to Susan G. Komen & American Cancer Society to support breast cancer prevention and treatment; and 116,105 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to create more than 87,297 meals for those in need.
Smith’s is a division of the Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR), the nation’s largest traditional grocery retailer. From its division office in Salt Lake City, Smith’s 15,600 associates serve customers in 133 stores throughout seven western states including 40 in Nevada.
