Dennis Hof, the bombastic legal pimp who made waves for clinching the GOP nomination for a Nevada legislative seat this year, has died. He was 72.

Hof's campaign manager Chuck Muth confirmed the news.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating windows that were shot out early Tuesday morning at a downtown Carson City antique store.

The incident happened at just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at Hanifin’s Arts and Antiques on the Curry Street entrance. The business is located at 210 North Carson Street. Two large plate glass windows were shot out. Dispatch received word of the vandalism at 1:33 a.m.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the shooting incident is under investigation and did not elaborate further.

Carson City resident John Barrette announced that he will run for Carson City Supervisor Ward 4. The former reporter says helping to drive a robust future for the city’s residents is his top priority.

Minden Republican Assemblyman Jim Wheeler had two stents implanted on Saturday but his spokesman says it wasn't a result of a heart attack and the press was wrong to say he had one, according to a news release.

Nevada District 39 Assemblyman, Jim Wheeler, checked into the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center Hospital early this Saturday morning after awakening with chest pains, said his press spokesman Steve Donahue.

Former Nevada Assemblywoman and hospital trustee Vivian Freeman died Thursday at her home in Reno. She was 86 years old.

She successfully underwent kidney transplant surgery in 2011 and passed away due to complications from a stroke she suffered on Nov. 26. In accordance with her wishes, she asked that all treatment be stopped so that she could return home where she died at 11:00 a.m. PST on Thursday, Dec. 5.

CARSON CITY – The House Ethics Committee announced today that it has established an investigative subcommittee to review ethics questions raised about Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., and whether she inappropriately furthered the business interests of her husband, Dr. Larry Lehrner.

The committee voted unanimously on June 29 to establish the subcommittee.

"The Ides of March," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a welcome change from the summer fare of bare-chested shoot 'em ups. It's a serious film about American politics with a fine cast headed by Ryan Gosling as Stephen Myers, a sleazy press secretary to George Clooney's Mike Morris, seeking the Democratic nomination for president at a hotly contested Ohio vote.

Clooney is almost just a supporting actor but even in his shorter screen time manages to impress. He also directs, produces and co-writes the script, which is tight and intelligent.

CARSON CITY – The U.S. Supreme Court today upheld Nevada’s ethics law in a case involving a Sparks city councilman. The opinion reversed a ruling by the Nevada Supreme Court.
The court, in an 11-page opinion written by Justice Antonin Scalia, said Nevada’s ethics law does not impinge on elected officials’ free speech rights by imposing limits on when they can vote on public matters because of conflicts of interest.

Here in the home of the politically audacious, Rory Reid has tested the bounds of boldness and possibly crossed into the land of the unethical. (Whether or not the campaign contribution law Rory thwarted should be on the books - many think it should not – is a topic for another day.)

The city attorneys for the city of Sparks have a unique audience for an upcoming case: the U.S. Supreme Court.
The court agreed last Friday to decide if states can forbid elected officials from voting when they may have a conflict of interest. The case involves a Sparks city councilman, Michael A. Carrigan, who is represented by the city.
