Carson City Road Report for Jan. 2-8

Due to a project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City, there will be shoulder work on Fairview Drive between E. Fifth Street and Butti Way. Minimal delays are expected.
There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected, but traffic control will be in effect.

  • North Carson St., in the vicinity of the freeway overpass.
  • Arrowhead Drive between N. Carson St. and Garnet Way.
  • Northgate Lane between Jumbo Court and Dyer Court.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Carson City is pleased to once again offer Christmas Tree Recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation/Waste Management Inc. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular collection day or taken to one of the drop-off locations. Trees will be chipped in the sprintime and given to local residents to use for mulch in their yards. No flocked trees! This program continues to be a huge success. Carson City would like to thank everyone for their participation. Last year we were able to redirect 28.48 tons of wood waste from our Landfill.

Public information meeting on update to CAMPO regional transportation plan

The public is invited to meet with staff, ask questions, and submit comments regarding the update to the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). The RTP is a long-range plan that
identifies transportation needs and proposed improvements to be implemented throughout a minimum of a 20-year horizon. Staff has begun to update the previous RTP with a new planning horizon of 2035. The creation of this
document is a federal requirement of CAMPO. Public comments are encouraged and invited throughout the planning process.

Road Report for November 21-27

Butti Way between Fairview Drive and Airport Road and Airport Road between Butti Way and Desatoya Drive will continued to be closed through Tuesday, November 22. These roads are expected to reopen on Wednesday, November 23. Those wishing to access the Public Works building may do so via Fairview Drive to westbound Butti Way. Those wishing to access the Parks and Recreation Department offices or the Jump Around Carson (JAC) transit office may do so via the south gate to the Public Works Corporate Yard off of Butti Way, south of Airport Road.

Road Report for Oct. 24-30

Due to celebrations for Nevada Day, the following road closures are expected for Saturday, October 29:

· Carson Street between Winnie Lane and Stewart Street and Stewart Street from its southern end to Little Lane will be closed beginning at 6:30 a.m. and will reopen at approximately 3:00 p.m. following the completion of the Nevada Day parade.

· Side streets along Carson Street between William Street and Winnie Lane will be closed for parade staging in the morning.

· Curry Street will be closed between Robinson and Musser Streets from 6:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.

Carson City Road Report for Oct. 17-23

On Monday, October 17, Saliman Road will be closed in the southbound direction between Fairview Drive and Colorado Street from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for sealing. One lane of traffic will remain open in the northbound direction.

During the period of Monday, October 17 through Wednesday, October 19, NDOT will be slurry sealing the following roads. Lane closures with flagger control will be in place and minor delays are expected.

  • Snyder Avenue from Bigelow Drive to US 395.
  • Frontage Road from Snyder Avenue to Old Clear Creek Road.

Carson City Road Report for October 10-16

Beginning Tuesday, October 11, and continuing through Thursday, October 13, Saliman Road will be closed in the southbound direction between Fairview Drive and Colorado Street. One lane of traffic will remain open in the northbound direction.

Road report for June 6-12

Due to utility work, Musser Street will be closed between Carson Street and Curry Street on Thursday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m. The road is expected to reopen at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10. Once Musser Street has been reopened, a lane closure with flagger control is expected throughout the remainder of the day.

Sidewalk improvements will continue along Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. Minor delays are possible and JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

Road report for May 23-29

Sidewalk improvements will continue along Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. There will be single lane traffic with flagger control. In addition, JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. No lane closures are expected.

Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the NDOT freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.

Carson City area road report for May 16-22

The following activities along Carson City roadways will take place due to utility work:

  • On Monday, May 16 through Wednesday, May 18, work is scheduled on Curry Street near the intersection with King Street. There will be single lane traffic with flagger control.
  • On Thursday, May 19, there will be single lane traffic with flagger control on Research Way south of College Parkway.

Road Report as of May 6, 2011. The following information applies to the period of May 9-15:

There will be temporary lane closures due to utility work on Fairview Drive between Highway 50 East and Butti Way and on North Edmonds Drive (old Edmonds) between Highway 50 East and the intersection with Fairview Drive.

Sidewalk improvements will occur on Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. No lane closures are expected, however JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

Road report for April 25 to May 1

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. However, no lane closures are expected.

Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the NDOT freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.

Carson City road report for April 18-24

On Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19, Edmonds Drive will be subject to single lane closures with flagger controlled traffic between Colorado Street and Koontz Lane, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Utility work will occur on Koontz Lane near the intersection with Edmonds Drive throughout the week. All lanes will remain open with only minor delays expected between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. However, no lane closures are expected.

Carson City road report through April 17

Here is the Carson City road report through April 17.
Because of utility work, Edmonds Drive will be reduced to a single lane with flagger controlled traffic near the intersection of Clearview Drive, Monday, April 11 through Wednesday, April 13, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Thursday, April 14, southbound Edmonds Drive will be subject to single lane closures with flagger controlled traffic between Colorado Street and Clearview Drive, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. However, no lane closures are expected.

Carson City road construction report through Jan. 2

With the end of the year brings continued road improvements in the Carson City region. Here's what's happening this week:

— Expect minor delays from Fairview Drive between Butti Way and 5th Street roundabout which will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during daytime hours because of water utility improvements.

Carson City road maintenance update through Dec. 26

Here is the Carson City road construction report for today, Monday, through Dec. 26.

Water utility improvements continue, and the following areas will be affected:

— Fairview Drive between Butti Way and 5th Street roundabout will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during daytime hours.  Expect minor delays.

— Butti Way between Airport Road and Fairview Drive will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during daytime hours. Expect minor delays.

Rain turns to snow in Carson City as storm pushes through; Tahoe may get several feet overnight (UPDATE: 9:40 PM)

Rain has turned to snow tonight as a strong winter storm continues to bring a mix of precipitation to the Carson City area and heavy snow at Lake Tahoe.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday morning for the Carson City region, while a winter storm warning continues at Lake Tahoe until 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Carson City and Carson Valley regions can expect about 2 to 4 inches of snow overnight, while Tahoe is expected to receive several more feet, especially in areas above 7,000 feet.

Earlier Sunday wind and rain caused a number of problems, including downed trees and minor flooding.

At 4:25 p.m., a large tree crashed into two vehicles on Nelson Lane near Bunch Way in Carson City. Tree limbs are reportedly also resting on homes, according to police dispatch. Meanwhile high winds that whipped through the area earlier this afternoon brought down another large tree in the area of Sherman Lane.

Water ponding has been reported throughout town, both the east and west sides, and around Highway 50 near the old Scolari's. Roof leaks have even been reported at the Carson City Sheriff's Office at 911 Musser Street.

Back-to-back weather systems moving into the Carson City area today has prompted the National Weather Service in Reno to issue a winter weather advisory through 3 a.m. Monday morning.

The following Carson City road information applies to the period of Dec. 13-19, 2010:

The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue working on a freeway landscaping project at the Fifth Street overpass over the freeway and at the Fairview Drive Interchange. Single lane closures are expected on the northbound on ramp from Fairview Drive to the Freeway. No delays are expected. Single lane closures with flaggers are also expected on Fairview Drive and on 5th Street in the vicinity of the Freeway, with minor delays expected.

Road report for Dec. 6-12

The Roop Street widening project is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The following impacts are expected this week:
· Roop Street is closed from William Street to Stewart Street through the completion of the project.
· Long Street will be closed from Stewart Street to Marian Street. Traffic will be detoured via Stewart Street, Corbett Street, and Molly Drive.
· Beverly Street will be closed to through traffic at Roop Street.
· Traffic crossing Roop Street may do so at Corbett Street.

Carson City animal shelter scales back, announces new hours

New hours for the Carson City Animal Shelter will go into effect on Monday, Dec. 7, health officials said.

The change reflects cost-cutting measures by one day from the current schedule. The shelter is now closed on Sundays, Mondays and holidays.

The Roop Street widening project is continuing and is expected to be completed by the end of 2010. The following impacts are expected this week:

  • Roop Street is closed from William Street to Stewart Street through the completion of the project.
  • William Street will have intermittent lane closures at Roop Street on Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for westbound traffic.

Join Mayor Crowell and other dignitaries at Leadership Carson City Class of 2010 Ribbon Cutting and Class Project Unveiling at the Carson City Animal Services, 3770 Butti Way beginning at 11 a.m.

The Leadership Class of 2010 certainly has made a difference in the lives of our canine friends. This was an ambitious project and one sorely needed. There will be great raffle prizes so come out and join in the festivities to kick of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.

Carson City road report for Oct. 25 through Nevada Day

Monday morning's Carson City commute may bring with it some debris-dodging following Sunday's wind and rain storm. The Carson City Public Works Department will have no doubt worked throughout the night clearing the streets. Give 'em a wave for their efforts if you see them on the streets.

Lands bill contains money for Kings Canyon, Carson River Canyon property

The Secretary of the Interior announced the approval of $90 million in funding for continued restoration at Lake Tahoe along with other park and trail projects in Nevada as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The funding includes money for the purchase by the Forest Service of the 13 acre Schulz property near the Kings Canyon Waterfall as well as funding up to 40 percent of the $1.6 million for the acquisition of the Bently, Carson River Canyon property. The balance of the funding and future management will be through the City’s Open Space Program.

The Carson City road construction report for the week of Oct. 18-24 continues to highlight the Roop Street widening project which is expected to be finished by the end of the year. The following impacts are expected this week:

— Roop Street is now open between William Street and Robinson Street.
— Roop Street will have intermittent lane restrictions from Robinson Street to Washington Street for striping.
— William Street will have intermittent lane closures at Roop Street on Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for westbound traffic.

Carson City animal shelter gets a facelift from chamber leadership class

Carson City Animal Services received a makeover on Saturday thanks to more than two dozen volunteers.

Through the Carson City Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class 2010, this top dog group put up fences, pounded nails and laid down coats of paint, sprucing up the Butti Way animal shelter.

With 17 Leadership Carson City class members present and student volunteers from Western Nevada College, the overhaul is designed to revamp the adoption area by adding new fences, outdoor furniture and dog-friendly shelters.

Carson City road construction projects ramp up for the week

As summer winds down, Carson City road construction crews continue on with local projects. Here are the ongoing improvements planned for Monday through Sept. 5. As always, expect minor delays and give crews a wave and a "brake" in construction zones.
