Western Republicans fight Obama wilderness policy

Republican governors and members of Congress vowed Tuesday to fight an Obama administration plan to make millions of acres of undeveloped land in the West eligible for federal wilderness protection. The GOP officials said the plan would circumvent Congress's authority and could be used to declare a vast swath of public land off-limits to oil-and-gas drilling.
Wyoming man dies after falling down closed Nevada mine site
Submitted by editor on Sat, 03/05/2011 - 9:38pm(Press Release) On Wednesday March 2, 2011, at approximately 12:00 p.m. Lander County Sheriff Ron Urger was notified that a man, later identified as Devin Westenskow, age 28, of Evanston, Wyoming, fell while exploring an abandoned mine shaft. The mine site closed since 1945, is located in the Jersey Valley at the far eastern part of Pershing County, Nevada.
Gov. Sandoval Says Washington, DC Meetings Productive, Could Help On Jobs Front
Submitted by admin on Tue, 03/01/2011 - 1:19pmCARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said today he had productive meetings in Washington, DC, including talks with federal officials about clearing the way for permits to be approved so mining companies can expand and hire more workers.
Sandoval said there are several permits awaiting action that mining officials have told him could lead to the creation of 1,000 high-paying jobs in rural Nevada.
Creating jobs in Nevada is Sandoval’s top priority as governor. Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation and ranks first in home foreclosures as well.
Idaho hunters want backcountry ATV trail access

Under current hunting regulations, the state requires armed hunters who head out onto public land in about a third of Idaho's 99 hunting units to stick to established roads, while keeping away from off-road vehicle or jeep trails and areas that are otherwise open to unarmed recreational ATV riders.

Carson City supervisors to review business scorecard, appoint two to Cultural Commission

The presentation is a monthly business review related to the performance scorecard for the city and includes data relevant to manufacturing and other sectors. Supervisors will meet beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.
Update: Carson City authorities say remains of dead woman will take time to positively identify
Submitted by editor on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 2:29pmThe remains of a woman found earlier today near Carson River Road will take some time to identify, Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong reports this afternoon.
Detectives are combing through the area near the Carson River after the body was discovered and reported at 12:54 this afternoon. She was found near the entrance of Silver Saddle Ranch. Furlong said the case is being treated as a homicide for the time being.
BLM Christmas tree permits available beginning Nov. 8

The agency allows Christmas tree sales to thin small trees in overstocked areas. Organizations and individuals are permitted to harvest trees for resale.

Burning Man: No police state in Black Rock City

It's the same gathering of free-wheeling Burners that have populated the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach for more than 10 years, with the Bureau of Land Management, Pershing and Washoe counties' sheriffs deputies helping keep the 48,195 Burners reasonably in line. Final attendance is expected to hit 50,000.
A dozen wild horses die in Nevada roundup

The BLM on its website says four more animals died or were put down because of dehydration or water intoxication.
