Only in Nevada does a state throw a party in its capital city and everyone is invited. And so it is with the celebration Saturday of the Silver State's 151st birthday in Carson City.
Nevadans from north, south, east west and central make the annual pilgrimage to the state capital to honor and celebrate statehood which came, Oct. 31, 1864.

A Nevada Day tradition, the annual pancake breakfast at the Governor’s Mansion is hosted by the Carson City Republican Women’s Club. Proceeds go toward scholarships of $1,000 each to two deserving seniors from Carson and Dayton High Schools.

Are you ready for this? Nevada Day weekend has arrived and brings with it a downtown filled with friends, neighbors, and fun. Hot air balloons, the annual beard contest, the parade, tours of the Governor’s Mansion, and more make this time of year amazing. The carnival at Mills Park, and the Pow-Wow at the Carson Colony take the festivities to the next level.

• Nevada Day Classic 8K Run/Walk (same day registration: $40 from 6:30am-7:30am on the second floor of the Carson Nugget Casino; 8am racers begin at Telegraph Square: W. Telegraph and N. Curry Streets; costumes encouraged)

On Wednesday, October 21, Jan Loverin, who has served as curator of the Nevada State Museum’s Marjorie Russel Clothing and Textile Center for over 30 years, will share her extensive expertise on the ‘intimate’ history of men’s and women’s underwear with the Leisure Hour Club. This event will be a perfect way to begin Nevada Day celebrations and will provide an entertaining look at a topic that is ‘never discussed in public.’

On Wednesday, September 16, Al Sheehan, long-time Carson City resident and retired Pam Am supervisor and trainer with over 30 years of experience, will share his insights into the many unusual situations which he detailed in his book, The Autobiography of Alfred Sheehan.

Planes, trains, and automobiles await! The Nevada State Railroad Museum features rides on the McKeen Motor Car this weekend. Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. Also on some fierce wheels this Sunday are the Carson Victory Rollers. Our roller derby team is hosting a scrimmage and collecting donations of school supplies at the Community Center.

SUNDAY: Last Day of Jazz and Beyond

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

The Jazz & Beyond - Carson City Music Festival concludes with nine events on Saturday, August 22, and four events on Sunday August 23.

Music in the Market – Barbara Baxter - 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Third & Curry St. Farmer's Market. Barbara Baxter sings soul-laced jazz with Jimmy Vermilion on piano.

Join the Elks Lodge 2177 for a Benefit Dinner and Concert at the Governor’s Mansion on Friday, August 14, 2015. Proceeds benefit the Carson High School Culinary Arts Program.

The event features Horse Crazy Cowgirl Band.

The program begins at 4:30 p.m. with a Social Hour and a Cash Bar. Tickets are $30 for concert and $7 for dinner.

Dinner features delicious sirloin burgers, jumbo hot dogs, and a buffet of homemade salads and deserts.

Concert begins at 6 p.m. at the Governor’s Mansion, 606 Mountain Street.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel has a way for parents to get their kids to look up from their screens and take in the real world at Lake Tahoe. The all-suite hotel has long been a family favorite in South Lake Tahoe and this summer’s offer is sure to please the parents. Part of the fun each year at Concert Under the Stars, A benefit for The Greenhouse Project, is the live auction. The generosity of the community by and through the donations of ever-changing and diverse packages, means there is something for everyone. And of course, the community’s willingness to bid and support the ongoing work of The Greenhouse Project, completes the circle.

Proscenium Players, Inc. brings a witty buffet of One Acts this weekend to the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.
Proscenium Players, Inc., the second oldest continuously-operating theater company in Nevada will present a series of humorous One Act plays this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The themes of the Acts are as varied as:

On Wednesday, May 20, Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, will speak in the Carson Nugget Ballroom to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club. Ms. Rupert will review the history of the Stewart Indian School and share insights into future plans for the historic site.

The weekend quickly approaches, but the fun won’t wait. Belt out a few tunes with karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, or smoke-free karaoke at the Feisty Goat Pub. ‘Live, Love, Lavish’ with local favorites, Lavish Green, at a special performance at Carson Cigar Co. tonight. It’s a good weekend to be a kid in Carson City. Easter egg hunts, bounce houses, fun and games abound: I’ve made family friendly events easy to find by putting them in bold in the list. It’s a good weekend to be an adult, as well, with the Downtown Business Association wine walk and a few adults-only egg hunts.

On Wednesday, April 15, Brian Crane (aka “Mr. Pickles”), nationally recognized syndicated cartoonist, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on the inspiration for his cartoon strip “Pickles.”

Mr. Crane joins the Leisure Hour Club members close to the 25th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip "Pickles" in April 1990. His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets my ideas for the nationally recognized strip.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its annual Spring Ball dinner-dance on April 25 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. Cost is $35. Hors d’oeuvres and no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m., dance performances at 6:30, buffet dinner at 7 p.m., open dancing 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. to West Coast swing, nightclub two-step, country two-step, and waltz. Head on down to Dayton for a big Easter Egg hunt starting at 10 a.m. at Abandoned Treasures, 5000 US HWY 50 East. Enjoy photos with the Easter Bunny, Pony Rides, a raffle, prizes, a bounce house, and vendors.

On Wednesday, March 18, Allen Rowe, owner of Northern Nevada Coin and Bullion will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on a variety of topics related to his involvement in the coin and precious metals profession. RSVP by March 12.
Mr. Rowe has been interested in coins since about the age of ten. Spending paper route money on coins was his favorite pass-time at that age. After graduating high school, he continued his education at the University of Nevada Reno where he earned a degree in medical sciences.

Dayton, Carson, Reno, and Lake Tahoe artists unite to help raise money for the Dayton Intermediate School's Theatre program to compete in the largest adjudicated educational theatre competition in Nevada.

This is a first for any Dayton School. This will be a night of amazing talent, food, auctions, and prizes! From standup comedians to singers to musicians, it will be a night to remember.

Dayton, Carson, Reno, and Lake Tahoe artists unite to help raise money for the Dayton Intermediate School's Theatre program to compete in the largest adjudicated educational theatre competition in Nevada. This is a first for any Dayton School! This will be a night of amazing talent, food, auctions, and prizes! From standup comedians to singers to musicians, it will be a night to remember! A foundation to help raise money for the Carson City School District will be launched next week during a reception at Carson High School.

“Our only mission is to support the kids in the community,” said Ian Hill, chairman of the foundation’s board. “For the first time, we’re going to be joining together all the people who care deeply about the Carson City School District.”

Austin’s House and Carson City Toyota Scion invite you to the 7th annual Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 27 at Carson Valley Inn. Put on your jeans and cowboy hat to celebrate the party atmosphere of Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday.

On Wednesday, February 18, David C. Antonucci, author, historian and regional expert on Lake Tahoe, Mark Twain, and the Olympic Games at the Lake, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on “Snowball’s Chance: Remembering the 1960 Olympics”.

Speaking of sports, sign-ups are going on Saturday for Little League, AYSO, and the Sierra Nevada Football League. Spring is almost upon us without ever really giving us a decent taste of winter.
