Chef David Stern is literally counting the hours until his new restaurant opens its doors in downtown Carson City.

Mystique Restaurant and Lounge, located at 318 N. Carson Street downtown, has closed permanently, owner Yvette Barrett said Tuesday.

The restaurant closed Saturday, Jan. 7, she said, and will not reopen.

Eighteenth Century English poet William Cowper once wrote that variety is the spice of life.

In Carson City, both variety and spice can be found together in one place at Sassafras Electic Food Joint, currently located on the Carson Hot Springs Resort property at 1500 Old Hot Springs Road.

Winning Best Taste for this year's Taste of Downtown is bittersweet for the owners of Sassafras, as their landlord has given them until the end of July to vacate that space.

"We are devastated, shocked, heartbroken," said Scott Doerr, who owns the business with partner and chef Tony Fish.

Doerr said they were presented with a termination of tenancy on June 16 by Double Eagle Cubed LLC, the entity that purchased the building from Magpie Properties, LLC last year.

While Carson City residents were mourning the loss of B'Sghetti's restaurant this week, it appears that plans for a new eatery named Sassafras were coming together behind the scenes.

Sassafras will be a "chalkboard restaurant" with a changing menu focusing on fresh, local foods, according to a press release sent to Carson Now. The restaurant will be a partnership between Chef Anthong "Tony" Fish who currently operates "The Grill" at Mo and Sluggo's, and B'Sghetti's owner Scott Doerr, along with Carl Ceccarelli and Jayme Watts.
