UNR theater and dance department tackles prejudice through the ages in stage play

These themes still resonate decades after black playwright Lorraine Hansberry first wrote “A Raisin in the Sun.” Hansberry defied convention by writing the breakthrough composition, the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway.
The University of Nevada, Reno Department of Theatre and Dance will also be breaking new ground as it presents “A Raisin in the Sun” in March with its first predominantly African-American cast. It will be the premier of the production in Reno, as well.

She was a regular in a floor show in a Mexican restaurant in the former Silver City Mall — where Lowe’s now stands. Earning her Screen Actors Guild card, she also starred in a McDonald’s commercial that ran annually.

The play, a seven-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based on Dorothy Gale’s adventures in the Land of Oz, runs through Jan. 17 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre. It features a mixture of rock, gospel and soul music numbers.

Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.

The cast and crew of the Western Nevada Musical Theater Co. knock it out of the park with this production. Carson High School’s annual Craft Fair begins tonight; a plethora of crafters, artisans, and vendors will be there to help with your holiday gift list. It’s West Coast Swing night at Yaple’s Ballroom, so put on your dance shoes and kick the weekend off right.

Ready for the weekend and beyond: Sierra-at-Tahoe resort to open Friday
Submitted by editor on Thu, 11/19/2015 - 5:45amWith a promising November that dropped early snow and brought sustained cold temperatures following the winter storms, Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to open before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Sierra Resort will in fact open Friday with early season conditions and limited terrain. The resort will run three lifts and two surface lifts and its season passes and additional products from 2014-15 will be valid for use through Dec. 20.

Hit the slopes if you are so inclined, several Tahoe resorts have opened for the season. Runners should head out to Washoe Lake State Park for the first of the Be Bold, Run in the Cold series sponsored by Ascent Runs. If you prefer something warmer, head to Crossroads Lounge for their Grand Re-opening. It’s under new ownership and is sure to have something to keep you toasty.
