Here is the fishing report for Western Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra for the week of April 27. Opening Day for fishing on California lakes and streams is April 30.

Water surface temperatures are at 44.7 degrees and water clarity has improved in most areas to 6.5 to 7.5 feet.
Lake Almanor looks great, and the bite has really picked up.

Outdoors with Don Q: April 30 is the Opening Day of the California fishing season

OK Gang, it’s almost time to have fun in the High Sierras once again. In just 10 days on April 30, the 2011 fishing season will open for applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California, plus all of the applicable waters in Inyo and Mono Counties. That season will then remain open until Tuesday, Nov. 15.

If you’re new to the area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to try your hand at fishing on that Opening Day or Weekend:

The Brown Bite Continues! More Browns are beginning to move in to areas along the east shore following the Pond Smelt.
On recent trips we have seen pretty solid numbers of Browns, some days having to cover more water than on others, but the fish are there.

Prospectus issued for campground concessions

By the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest issued a prospectus on April 1, 2011, for two campgrounds’ concession operations that will begin January 1, 2012.  The prospectus solicits proposals to operate and maintain campgrounds and day-use areas under a special use permit.

The operator is responsible for all operations and maintenance of facilities in the permit.  Fees collected from users accrue to the concessionaire, with a percentage returned to the government as a permit fee. 

Lyon County prepares for flooding potential along Carson, Walker rivers

With warm temperatures ahead this week, Lyon County has initiated preparations for possible flooding on the Walker and Carson rivers.

Lyon County Emergency Management recommends those with homes in low lying areas along both the Carson and Walker rivers take necessary precautions to prepare for possible moderate to major flooding in the coming weeks, according to the county's website.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:

Carson City celebrates Cupid with dining, theater and special events

Valentine’s Day in Carson City transforms into a week-long display of affection with candlelit dining options, special events, theatre performances and lodging specials, Feb. 12 – 19.

Selecting a restaurant for a romantic evening doesn’t have to be an intimidating task. The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau compiled a list of favorites as recommended by the citizens of Nevada’s Capital based on surveys and local “best of” votes.

Chain controls on area roads

Most area highways have snow tire or chains required this morning, with chains/4WD required for the mountain passes west of Lake Tahoe.

Carson City schools are all open today on time. Sorry, kids, no snow day!

U.S. Highway 50 from east of Dayton to South Lake Tahoe, and U.S. Highway 395 from Bridgeport to Reno have chains or snow tires required. SR 341 to Virginia City and Mount Rose Highway are also chains or snow tires required.

More thunderstorms possible today for Carson City region

The National Weather Service reports that a low pressure system near the California coast could produce thunderstorms again in the Carson City and Tahoe region today similar to those on Saturday and Sunday. Lighting and gusty winds can be expected with the storms if they indeed generate.

Carson City BLM office: Statewide public land fire restrictions begin July 16

With hot weather, dry lightening and drought conditions arriving this summer, conditions for explosive brush and forest fires across the Silver State has increased. Because of this, the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office has announced plans to begin statewide fire restrictions on public lands beginning Friday, July 16.
