New Carson Tahoe Breast Center to open in August

Carson Valley's GE Bentley raises more than $215,000 for local breast cancer patients

The Carson Tahoe Health Foundation honored a group of employees from GE Bently Nevada and the Carson Valley Inn for their ongoing efforts in support of local cancer patients in need. Over the last 12 years, they have donated over $215,000 in funds raised in support of the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, an affiliate of Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, during their annual GE Bunko for Breast Cancer event held at the Carson Valley Inn.

Run on Saturday to benefit local mom with cancer

Doctors have told Leslie McGarry her cancer is terminal, predicting she has between two to five years left to live.
She disagrees.

“I don’t feel like,” she begins, but pauses to cover her 5-year-old daughter’s ears. “I don’t feel like I’m dying,” she continues. “Medically, I get it. But I refuse that diagnosis.”

One technician put it to her bluntly. “You have an expiration date,” he told her.

“I laughed. I do have an expiration date, we all do,” McGarry said. “But that’s up to God. He has the final answer.”

Carson City Soroptimist Stroke to Help Golf Tournament September 26

Soroptimist International of Carson City is still signing up golfers for its 14th annual Stroke to Help golf tournament, coming up on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The tournament is a scramble format, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, at Eagle Valley Golf. Players can choose to play on either the East Course for the fun, or the West Course for the challenge.

Go Fund Me account established for Dayton woman battling breast cancer

Dayton resident Lois Heflin is in her second battle with cancer and even with insurance, bills are mounting.

“She continues to work at the Northwest Territorial Mint, and has used up her leave time so the time off for appointments and chemotherapy are unpaid,” said Sheila Heflin-Conour, her daughter. “The financial situation has become very challenging, and I thought I would surprise them by setting up a Go Fund Me account in order to help offset their day-to-day living expenses.”

Carson High's Future Health Professionals raise $350 for Carson Tahoe Cancer Foundation

Carson High School HOSA: Future Health Professionals, presented a check Tuesday to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Foundation. The club members raised and donated $350 to go toward breast cancer research/awareness by selling breast cancer awareness lanyards at $3 each in November.

When I’m asked about Obamacare, I use it as an opportunity to show how much difference progressive change can make. Open enrollment began one year ago, on October 1st, 2013. The websites had a rocky rollout, but 10.3 million Americans who had no health insurance a year ago now have coverage.

Minden, Nev. – Local H2O at Home® Independent Advisor, Pamela Mann, is donating her commission made from her H2O at Home® sales in October to Breast Cancer Fund.

Mann has donated her October commission for the past three years to Breast Cancer Fund in memory of her mother who passed away from breast cancer in 2013.

Senator Square: Theater and music productions, cancer awareness and flu vaccinations in October

Currently playing at the Carson City Community Center is the "House of Bernalda Alba" performed by CHS Theater students. The dramatic play had its first show this past weekend. It will continue this coming weekend with performances on Oct. 9, 10, 11 at 7p.m. and again at 2 p.m. on Oct. 11. General admission prices are $10 at the door, $5 for students.
