Event Date:
March 24, 2012 (All day)

A bad year for motorsports in the Silver State

This weekend saw two more tragedies for the motorsports world with Nevada connections.

Most people have already heard about or seen the video replays of the horrific IndyCar crash in Las Vegas on Sunday that claimed the life of two-time Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon.

The same day, off-road racer Rick Huseman was killed in a plane crash in California after taking off from North Las Vegas.

Reflections on 8th Burning Man visit

By Sam Bauman
First time I went to Burning Man on the Black Rock playa, I slept in my SUV. Not bad but second and third it was in my tent, a very gritty and uncomfortable week. Fourth I weaseled my way into a friend's a fold-out trailer, which was better. But from then on I teamed up with a retired airline pilot, who had a nice 27-foot Winnebago. Four of us the first three times, just two the last.

Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake trout season opens Oct. 1

Pyramid Lake, located about 30 miles north of Sparks, will open on Saturday, Oct. 1 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.
Here is all kinds of interesting information on that lake:

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — With all 50,000 tickets apparently cashed in, the 25th Burning Man event is gearing up for the big shot, the burning of the 40-foot effigy of the Man himself right in the middle of the Black Rock Desert playa.

Basking in Burning Man: Scenes from Friday amid the love and good energy (SLIDESHOW)

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — As Friday turned to Saturday here, it has been better-than ideal for Burning Man guests with calm winds, a bright (and hot!) sun and relentless love, fun, art, peace and lots of good energy. Thus far with this report, not a hint of high winds, which trigger whiteouts and misery.

Outdoors with Don Q: Six-day tour of Northern Nevada

Beginning Wednesday, May 18 and ending on Sunday, May 22, Elaine and I took her 82-year-old Mom, Mary Bottoms, on a six-day tour of rural Nevada. It was her first-ever trip to all kinds of interesting places.

She has been a permanent resident of this state for the last 3.5 years, and prior to moving here from Greeley, Colo., she had visited us in Carson City a number of times. Those visits had been made by either train or bus and were always along the I-80 corridor from Wendover to Reno. That was all she had ever seen of the State of Nevada until this particular trip.

Some good news from the Burning Man folks. Maybe some critics swill have second thoughts. Burning Man's fiery salute to a different way of living

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — At about 9:45 Saturday night, the crowd was all expectation as fireworks began blazing around the base of the Burning Man figure, 40 feet tall, looming against the black sky over the Black Rock Playa and Black Rock City eight miles from Gerlach, Nev.

Burning Man: No police state in Black Rock City

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — Forget all those rumors about this year's Burning Man event being a police state.

It's the same gathering of free-wheeling Burners that have populated the Black Rock Desert near Gerlach for more than 10 years, with the Bureau of Land Management, Pershing and Washoe counties' sheriffs deputies helping keep the 48,195 Burners reasonably in line. Final attendance is expected to hit 50,000.
