Pilot Hero 'Sully' Sullenberger to Discuss Thunderbird Preservation; tickets now available

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the pilot who calmly and heroically landed his jetliner on New York’s Hudson River saving all 155 passengers and crew on board, will speak in Incline Village at a benefit for the Thunderbird Preservation Society on Saturday, Sept. 3.
The man who redefined “hero” on January 15, 2009, will discuss the importance of core values, including the preservation of vintage Americana – specifically Lake Tahoe’s historic Thunderbird Lodge and Yacht.

NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet May 14 in Reno

Rev. Onie Cooper and Dr. Milton Glick will be remembered at the Reno-Sparks NAACP's 66th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Atlantis Resort in Reno. Reception begins at 6:00 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. in the hotel's Grand Ballroom.

The keynote address will be delivered by retired City of Reno Assistant Chief of Police Ondra (pronounced like the French "Andre") Berry. He currently serves as a colonel in the Nevada Air National Guard and is a partner in a consulting firm.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club is offering a free, two-hour lesson in basic West Coast swing at its monthly dance party May 21 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. The free lesson is 5-7 p.m., followed by an intermediate-level West Coast swing lesson offered at 7 p.m. for $7. Students honor Cesar Chavez at UNR today

Press Release — Today from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., the University of Nevada Latino Student Advisory Board will host a Cesar Chavez commemoration under the rotunda in the Knowledge Center just south of Lawlor Events Center next to the Crowley Student Union. Fiesta Mexicana will dance and Sen. Moises Denis, D-Las Vegas, will speak.

"We are hosting this event because we want to honor Cesar Chavez and his contributions to civil rights," said student leader Carla Castedo, a senior psychology major.
