From a ban on surprise hospital ER billing to 'red flag’ gun law, new bills take effect in Nevada

Today, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020 is the beginning of a new year, a new decade and also a new set of laws. More than 70 laws enacted by the Nevada Legislature last year take effect either in whole or in part today.

They include several major health care initiatives — including a ban on surprise emergency room bills, a tax on vaping products and a requirement that hospitals use patients’ preferred names and pronouns — as well as laws that will benefit employees, including paid sick leave.

Carson City deputies arrest motorcycle rider for alleged unsafe driving, weapon violation

A 33-year-old Gardnerville man was arrested in the area of South Carson Street for misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon without a permit and carless driving after riding a motorcycle unsafely, causing other vehicles on the roadway to slow and alter their direction of travel, a Carson City sheriff's report states.

Carson City job growth up 3.6 percent over year, Reno up 4.8 percent

Job growth in Carson City increased by 1,100 jobs or 3.6 percent over October 2018, according to metropolitan area figures released Tuesday by Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Reno employment figures increased 4.8 percent, and Las Vegas, 1.3 percent over the course of the year.

Nevada jobs up over the year in October, unemployment remains unchanged

CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada fell by 1,800 jobs over the month but is up 30,800 over the year, according to data released Wednesday by the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate is unchanged from September, at 4.1 percent, and is down 0.3 percentage point when compared to last October.
