The clock is ticking for last minute shoppers. Luckily, Carson City has great options for everyone on the list. Telegraph Square in downtown will be hopping with a Santa parade, vendors, and a pirate ship, in addition to great shops. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting a weekend-long art sale with one of a kind options throughout the campus. Art is a great gift, and making it is even more fun. Carson City Pottery is holding an open house today; a gift certificate for a pottery class is perfect for all skill levels.

My snow dance worked! The weather should start clearing up for the next few days, so the roads should be clear. There’s no need to leave our valley though, great things are happening. The annual Share Your Christmas food drive goes on for most of the day: you don’t even need to leave your car, just drive up to the Governor’s Mansion, and someone will get your donation to the right place. Unwind, decompress and relax at a number of our great bars and restaurants.

Marla Fibish and Bruce Victor are Noctambule. They play original and traditional music in a variety of forms – original musical settings of a broad array of poetry, original instrumental pieces, and traditional Irish tunes and songs. This unique collaboration brings out qualities in both of these seasoned musicians that you may not have heard from them before.

Nevada State Prison featured in Carson City Christmas Ornament series

Since 2003 the Office of Business Development, through the Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee, has chosen and produced an ornament featuring an important building in the history of our city.

Featured ornaments of the past and still available are St. Peter’s, Civic Auditorium, Presbyterian Church Depot, V&T Depot, St. Teresa, Bliss Mansion and more.

Railroad Photographer Exhibition coming to Carson City

In the tradition of Winterail, Silver Rail 2015 is an informal gathering of railroad photographers, artists, writers, historians and preservationists. The event will be Oct. 3 at the Brewery Arts Center and will feature a full day of multimedia presentations of documentary and creative railroad photography and fellowship.

Judge rules for Brewery Arts Center in lease dispute against Foodies Bystro

The Brewery Arts Center prevailed in Carson Justice Court Tuesday morning in the nonprofit’s quest to evict Foodies Bystro from its spot in the center’s facility at the corner of King and Division streets.

Judge Steven McMorris agreed with the BAC’s request to invalidate a portion of the lease that would have allowed Foodies to renew the lease for another three years. The judge found that the wording of the section was vague because it allowed for the lease to be renewed, but didn’t specify that the renewal would be under the same terms and conditions.

Downtown Wine Walk a perfect farewell to summer

Time for another wine walk, Carson City, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, Sept. 5, the festivities begin at 1 p.m.

Grab a wine glass, map, and hand stamp at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jack’s, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Touched by an Angel, or Bella Fiore. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins. Every first Saturday over 30 shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.

Optimist Club for Kids coming to Carson City

Local business people, and other interested locals, will meet this Thursday, August 20 at 9:00 Am at the Artisan Café, across from the Ormsby House, for the first meeting to organize and charter a local Optimist Club for the kids of Carson City. Optimist clubs have programs for kids including Respect for Law, Internet Safety, Junior Golf and Scholarship programs to name a few. The community is invited to attend the organizational meeting which will have Optimist directors coming in from Sacramento and Southern California. Its a great way to help the kids of our community.

Celebrate Prohibition-style at the Brewery Arts Center: the annual Speakeasy Swing Dance Party wants to see you in your finest zoot suit or flapper dress. Head back to the Eighties at Living the Good Life; DJ Bobby G is spinning the hits from yesteryear.

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with.
