Wednesday, October 14: Things to do in and around Carson City

Carson City will break ground on the new Animal Services facility today, at 9:30 a.m. Attending the ceremony will be Carson City Public Works officials, the City Board of Supervisors, Carson Animal Services Initiative, and representatives of the Nevada Humane Society. The facility will be located on Airport Road in Carson, just south of the intersection of Airport Road and Butti Way. The public is invited.

Monday returns, and I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather this past weekend. Autumn in Northern Nevada follows no rules when it comes to temperature, so enjoy it while you can, because it can, and does, change on a dime. A great way to start your week is by enjoying something beautiful, and luckily Carson City offers a good handful of art exhibits to appreciate. If you missed Industrial Art at the Courthouse, wander over to its new home in the Carson City Library. Today also kicks-off a week-long celebration at the Carson Cigar Company in honor of their 20th Anniversary. Enjoy live music with ‘Cheese the Knife’ featuring Ev Mussleman of the Trippin King Snakes. If you prefer to do the singing yourself, Firkin and Fox is where you’ll find karaoke.

Ready for the weekend, Carson City? Don’t miss out on the annual Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary. This event featuring crafts, games, and music is always fun. Learn about the Basque Culture at the Nevada State Museum. This month’s Family Fun Saturday features presentations and activities. Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans are hosting a free Legal Aid Fair in the Sierra Room of the Community Center for those of you with questions about civil, non-criminal, matters.

The leaves are beginning to turn, but the nice weather is still holding out. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year in Carson City. Enjoy the sunshine with Supervisor Karen Abowd; her monthly walkabout leaves the Community Center steps at noon. Party for a cause at Carson Lanes tonight: DJ Cowboy Bobby’s open dance night is raising money for a local woman with cancer. Mo’z Motley Blues returns to Living the Good Life and always kicks the weekend off right. Whiskey Tavern is where you can channel your inner diva; it’s karaoke night.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Humble Vessel, by artist Karl Schwiesow at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from June 13 – September 11, 2014. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The exhibition is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

CCAI Exhibition: "An Algebraic Lens"

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, An Algebraic Lens, by artist Ben Hoffman at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from September 20, 2013 – January 23, 2014. The reception is free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open to the public Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.

Western Nevada College Summer Art Exhibition Features Space Photography

A fascinating and colorful exhibition of space photography is on display in Carson City at the Western Nevada College Main Art Gallery through August. 23. The collection contains several dozen large photographs of Earth’s moon, planets in our Solar System and their moons, and colorful nebulae.

A photograph of the Observatory under the night sky, taken over a 40-minute duration, offers a fascinating look at the movement of stars in the night sky.

'Living in El Norte' art exhibition at Courthouse Gallery

Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition by artist Blanco de San Roman at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery from September 14, 2012 through January 18, 2013. Blanco's exceptional paintings continue the centuries long Spanish tradition of monumental portrait painting. Deborah Boehm, PhD, has written the exhibition essay, "The Universality of Daily Experience". The gallery is on the second floor of the Courthouse at 885 E. Musser St., Carson City. Annual Student Art Exhibition

The annual student exhibits fill all three galleries at the Carson City campus, spreads throughout the Fallon campus, and includes student and faculty creations from the Douglas campus and rural teaching centers.
Works are as diverse as the college's course offerings - from painting and drawing to multimedia art, electronic arts, printmaking, photography, sculpture and pottery.
