Sharp object, crude key carved from top of Ajax can found in Carson City jail cell

A Carson City jail inmate faces a felony charge of possessing a dangerous weapon after authorities on Tuesday found pieces of shaped metal in his jail cell.

The metal objects were made from the top of an Ajax can. One was shaped into a key, presumably to get out of handcuffs, and the other was transformed into a thin piece of metal, shaped into a sharp object, presumably to hurt someone.

Carson City road report for April 29 through May 5

Here is the Carson City area road construction and maintenance report for the week of April 29 through May 5.
There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

There will be intermittent lane closures on Fairview Drive from Edmonds Drive to Carson Street beginning Sunday, April 28, and continuing into the week due to roadway maintenance. There will also be intermittent closures on Longview Way from Ash Canyon Road to Kings Canyon Road. Minimal delays are expected.

Drawings by North Las Vegas artist Marylou Evans are the latest creations featured at the Nevada Legislature at LXS, the Legislative eXhibition Series gallery in Carson City. Open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. adjacent to the Caucus Deli, the LXS displays Evans’ work April 29 through May 17. Managed by the Artist Services Program of the Nevada Arts Council, the Legislative eXhibition Series has provided a spotlight on the Silver State's breadth of contemporary and folk artists during the biennial session since 1985.

Lawmakers seek to reduce Nevada's VA claim backlog

U.S. Senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller joined representatives of Nevada's delegation of U.S. House of Representatives — Joe Heck (NV-03), Dina Titus (NV-01), and Steven Horsford (NV-04) — in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Under Secretary for Benefits Allison Hickey and Reno VA Regional Office Director Edward Russell, offering help in addressing Nevada’s backlog of VA claims.

Amodei to host veterans' town hall in Carson City

Congressman Mark Amodei will hold a veterans' town hall meeting in Carson City on Monday, April 29, from noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Carson City Veterans Hall, 198 South Carson Street.

"I want to continue to meet with our veterans and listen to them regarding the issues and challenges they face," said Amodei. Missing Carson City teen found safe

Lue Vang, a Carson City teen who has been missing since April 29, has been found safe in Toledo, Ohio.

Attorney Day Williams, who represents Lue's mother Yer Her, said she is in Toledo where her son is in a crisis center, and the two will be flying home today.

According to Williams, Yer Her said that Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Jessica Rivera "ultimately pulled thing through for us. She coordinated the whole thing."

The family appreciates the outpouring of community support for them.

Carson City man faces felony domestic violence charges

A Carson City man faces a felony domestic battery charge after allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the face with a cup in front of their 5-year-old daughter, grabbing the woman by the throat and preventing her their from leaving the home.

Justin Thomas Keeney, 33, was arrested Thursday, April 28, in the 900 block of Saliman Road. Bail was set at $27,500.

Car Cruise Night to benefit family who died in accident

A Cruise Night to benefit the the family of Alexis, Colton and David Melendrez, who died in a car accident in Mound House — will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday night, April 29, in Carson City, reports KOLO TV Channel 8 Reno. The benefit cruise is to raise money to help defray the costs associated with funerals and medical expenses.

Smokey the Bear Celebrates Arbor Day in Carson City

For the second consecutive year, Smokey the Bear will be celebrating Arbor Day with the Carson City Shade Tree Council. The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. on April 29, 2011 and will be held at Governor's Field (behind Lowe's). The festivities are approximately an hour long. Smokey will arrive at Governor’s Field in a Nevada Division of Forestry fire tender.

Smokey will also have “goodie” bags for the children attending the celebration. Smokey will help the Council and its guests plant a Northern Red Maple selected by the staff of the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department.

Arbor Day 2011 in Carson City

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 29. The hour-long celebration will be held at Governors’ Field (behind Lowe’s) and will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Among those attending will be Smokey Bear who will help the Council plant the Northern Red Maple selected by the staff of Carson City’s Park and Recreation Department. The tree planting is scheduled at 6 p.m. The Council paid for the tree with money it raised at annual Fall Tree Care Seminar.

The Brown Bite Continues! More Browns are beginning to move in to areas along the east shore following the Pond Smelt.
On recent trips we have seen pretty solid numbers of Browns, some days having to cover more water than on others, but the fish are there.

Nevada Group Urges New Tax on Car Miles to Fund Road Improvements

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Highway Users Coalition has announced its support for moving forward with a study on Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) as a potential alternative to the current gas tax paid by motorists at the pump to fund road improvements and maintenance.
According to those involved in the study, the consequences of inaction could include the deterioration of roads and highways, increased vehicle wear and tear, increased congestion and accidents and longer commute times.
