Outdoors with Don Q: Good news for some is bad news for others

We have a small, comfortable home, built in the late 1940's, located in the older west side of Carson City, and we recently discovered that what is considered good news for some is actually bad news for others in our particular neighborhood. Let me explain what I mean:

FAA Clears Nevada for First Drone Test Site Flight

RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration has cleared Nevada to begin flying drones at a southern Nevada airport as part of nationwide research into unmanned aerial systems.

Capital Crossfire: Drones – Balancing Privacy with the Need for Innovation

The latest edition of Capital Crossfire explores drones and their future in Nevada. Join Karl Neathammer and Shelly Aldean with guests Steve Tackes, a senior partner of Kaempfer Crowell Law and Karl Hutter, COO of Click Bond, a local manufacturing company in Carson City as they discuss new developments in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (“Drones”) and the regulatory challenges associated with their use.

UNR poised to support Nevada as national drone development center

RENO, Nev. – The FAA has selected the State of Nevada as one of six states designated as a center for the development of unmanned aerial vehicles and outdoor testing of unmanned autonomous systems, Nevada Gov.

Nevada picked among six drone development centers

Nevada has been picked as one of six locations to be a center for drone development in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday.

As a drone development site, the state would benefit by providing thousands of jobs with an average wage of approximately $62,000; an estimated $2.5 billion in economic impact in present dollars; and an estimated $125 million in annual state and local tax revenue.

Nevada's superstorm scenario: Scientists say it's only a matter of time

Trouble comes via a vast aerial plume stretching across the Pacific — an atmospheric river — that hoses the West Coast with moisture for weeks.

The first big storm blasts the Sierra with snow and hurricane-force wind, dropping 25 feet of snow around Lake Tahoe and twice as much in the mountains to the west.

Nevada looks at 'drones' for economic development and natural resource efforts

Unmanned Aerial Systems, also known as drones, may be relatively small, but could have a big impact on Nevada’s economy and natural resources, especially when the necessary pieces and experts come together to do the work and research.

To that end, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the University’s Center for Economic Development at the College of Business, is holding a public workshop on unmanned aerial systems, with a focus on how communities in Nevada can become involved with this economic initiative.

Enhancements ahead of winter highlight North Lake Tahoe ski resorts

Although you might not feel it, the weather is starting to change in North Lake Tahoe. Days are still warm, with temperatures averaging in the 60s, but nights are dropping to approximately 35 degrees. It’s the time of year that the region’s upper elevations may even see a dusting of snow.

“We’ve been reviewing all the long-range forecasts,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “And if Mother Nature keeps up her end, we should have above-average snowfall this winter.”

Highway 395 re-opened after Carter fire burns 2,000 acres south of Gardnerville

UPDATE 8:45AM: Highway 395 has reopened with controls (pilot vehicle) so expect delays and watch for fire vehicles, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
The fire, which has burned more than 2,000 acres, is burning mostly upslope east of Highway 395 into predominately BLM public lands in the southern Pine Nut Mountains. There is a decreasing threat to approximately 30 homes west of the highway. If the fire were to jump the highway, however, this is looking less likely as fire personnel consolidate fire lines. No structures have been lost at this time. Power lines down at the fire scene, but they are deenergized, which is impacting some local rural residences. The fire is 5 percent contained. Full containment expected by Sept. 24. An aerial reconnaisance this morning will evaluate fire acreage and behavior. Nine airtankers are currently assigned to the incident, which includes four large airtankers and five single-engine airtankers (SEATs).
Structure protection is being handled by units of the East Fork Fire Protection District (Douglas County).
Incident Command Post is at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
One minor firefighter non-burn injury reported.
