We’ve got a ton of great events going on today and tomorrow, so check below to see what’s happening!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The Union will host a dining fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project on Friday, and artist Jakota Wass performs at Bella Vita Bistro. The 43rd annual Wild Sheep Show will be held at the Reno-Sparks Convention. Comedian Marc Yaffee headlines the Carson Comedy Club on Saturday with much more in store for the weekend! Writer, humorist and environmentalist Michael Branch will discuss his works this Tuesday, Jan. 14 at the Nevada State Library and Archives in Carson City as part of its Brown Bag luncheon series. Branch is the author of several published books, one of which is the Pulitzer-Prize nominated John Muir’s Last Journey: South to the Amazon and East to Africa.


How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? For that matter, how many adults say they are going to write a book one day, paint like Michelangelo, or seek discomfort, my own personal new year’s resolution, by learning something new, performing selfless endeavors, or fulfilling an item on their bucket list?

The Nevada State Museum is offering a step back into Carson City’s history on Saturday, Jan. 11, complete with a presentation from the city’s founding family.

It was in January of 1870 when the doors of the Carson City Mint were opened to the public by its first superintendent — and Carson City’s founder — Abe Curry.

First Descents is piloting in 2020 a monthly meetups program in northern Nevada. The program will provide 11 life-changing outdoor and outdoor-related adventures this year free of cost to local young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions.

The annual Northern Nevada Special Olympics and Special Needs Cinderella Pageant was held Saturday evening at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Reno. Dozens of participants took part in this event, hosted by the Cinderella Girls organization.

Christine Lenox, Ed.D., has been appointed as director of Student Support Services for the Carson City School District. She will begin her role with the district after it is announced at the next school board meeting Jan. 14, 2020.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air as we head into the final stretch of the work week. Thursday events around the capital city feature an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a Carson City tradition with the return of Joyful Noise Holiday Community Show at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

It’s a holly, jolly Christmas! Cherie Shipley and Lake Tahoe Entertainment present the 18th Annual Community Holiday Show "Joyful Noise" this Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Come to Brewery Art Center’s Performance Hall on January 25, 2020 to experience Loud As Folk, hosted by Spike McGuire. This is one night only, and the showcase will be feature performances by Whitney Myer, Jelly Bread’s Dave and Cliff, Mel and Gia, and Tyler Stafford. With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

The U.S. Mint Building in Carson City is one of the city’s most recognizable, enduring and beloved structures. Those adjectives likely would not apply to Alfred B. Mullett, the man who designed the building, now home to the Nevada State Museum, 150 years ago — especially “beloved.”

Bundle up and join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space for another adventure under the full moon. December's full moon hike this Wednesday will not only feature the beautiful "Cold Moon," we will also be getting a unique vantage point of the city's holiday decorations from atop C-Hill.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Sparks is pleased to present an evening of new and traditional Christmas music. Adam and Alissa Teachout Brian Gallagher and Angelese Pepper will perform using piano, marimba and cello. There will be some singalong as well.

Carson City Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, are trained volunteers who represent the best interests of children who have been abused or neglected.

CASA volunteers are appointed by a Judge and serve as the voice of the child in the courtroom. The CASA volunteer helps to ensure that the children are in safe, permanent and thriving environments.

CARSON CITY — Recently, the United States Department of Agriculture announced two proposed changes, and one final rule change, to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program which serves more than 400,000 Nevadans.

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

Enjoy holiday traditions at the La Posada Celebration which is happening Saturday, Dec. 14 from noon to 3 p.m. at Carson Nugget Hall in the Aspen Building on Western Nevada College’s Carson City campus.

Carson Valley Community Theatre will be holding auditions for two new productions, Putnam County Spelling Bee and "Nunsense II," on Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. Mark your calendars and come to The Annex, 1572 Hwy 395 in Minden to audition for one, or both, productions.

The Carson Victory Rollers presents the 2019 "Season's Beatings, a Scrimmage for Charity" this Sunday at the Carson City Community Center. Donations collected go to Carson City Senior Center's Meals on Wheels program.

Heading into its 16th year of giving Carson City schoolchildren living without permanent homes a Christmas for themselves and their family, Holiday with a Hero is upon us and so is the need for the community's financial support.

The biggest holiday celebration in Carson City, the Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights, is scheduled to bring holiday cheer to the masses on Friday, Dec. 6.

The Silver and Snowflakes Festival has been the official beginning of the holiday season for years, with the lighting of the great Christmas tree on Capitol grounds. Keep an eye out for Santa Claus, the Grinch, Max the dog, and Carson City's 5th graders who will be singing their hearts out while the tree is lit!
