Heavenly and Northstar delay opening dates due to warm conditions
With recent warm temperatures in the Lake Tahoe region, Vail Resorts announced Wednesday they have delayed their targeted opening days at both Heavenly Mountain Resort and Northstar California Resort.
"We are monitoring the weather minute-by-minute, and our expert snowmaking teams are ready to make snow at every possible opportunity so that we can open for the 2023/24 ski and ride season the moment we’re able to," said Ashlee Lambert, senior communications manager for the Tahoe region. "Until then, we’ll continue to provide updates on the outlook and will share a new planned opening date as soon as possible."
Kirkwood is still scheduled to open on Friday, Dec. 1, conditions permitting.
Both Heavenly and Northstar have activities people can enjoy until the snow flies. The original opening date for ski operations remains at the date the Gondola will open, Nov. 17, for sightseeing in addition to Tamarack Lodge and Blue Café for amazing views, signature dishes and drinks.
In the Village at Northstar, Wild Pine, Bourbon Pub, Rink Bar, and the new café VOUS will open Friday, Nov. 17, as well as True North, Patagonia, The North Face, Oakley, Burton, Butterbox, Northstar Logo Co., and Mine.
The resorts will announce their ski and ride opening dates as soon as they are able.
Meanwhile, there will be periods of mountain snow expected through Saturday. National Weather Service forecasters say the first storm system, which arrived early Wednesday evening and is expected into Thursday afternoon, will drop 1 to 4 inches around Lake Tahoe above 8,000 feet.
Forecasters say weather outlook models remain unclear with the snow amounts for the second storm this weekend, although models are showing slightly higher totals than the from first storm system Wednesday night into Thursday.
