Carson City District Attorney clears 3 officers in fatal standoff with man holding infant hostage
Staley was shot and killed after a four-hour standoff with law enforcement on North Edmonds Drive. According to Woodbury’s report, Staley held his 11-month-old child hostage and made numerous threats as officers tried to negotiate the child’s release.
Woodbury determined deputies were “left with no choice” but to attempt an emergency rescue after negotiations broke down and Staley articulated an imminent threat to the child’s life. Staley then fired two gunshots in the residence followed by a third as deputies approached the entry.
Staley was armed with a handgun, which he raised and aimed at the deputies when they entered. Woodbury determined there was “substantial evidence” that Staley fired at the officers as he charged toward them after their entry. The deputies returned fire, killing Staley. The child was found inside the residence, unharmed. No law enforcement officers were injured during the engagement.
Woodbury concluded the use of deadly force was “reasonable and justified” under Nevada law. The case was investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office with support by the Nevada Division of Investigation and the Forensic Investigation Section of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
